I've been to all of those areas and though they are nice, they are not as safe as I'd like. Especially compared to other major international cities.

You said it, North American cities. These are not safe cities according to my standards.

I have been to all of these cities. Each one feels unsafe at night, with the exception, sometimes, of the rich areas.

Singapore for instance. Many European cities are very safe too.

It's safer than say London, Birmingham, Paris or Rome.

Less safe than say Oslo, Amsterdam, Edinburgh or Copenhagen.

Basically in the middle among major European cities.

Compared to the US it is much safer than Chicago, Detroit or Atlanta and less safe than for example Denver or Boston.

If you want to see truly safe cities, even by EU standards, check out Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, or Doha.

I've been to most of these cities and it surprises me the Asian ones aren't higher up.

I absolutely felt safer in Singapore and Tokyo than Toronto.

I'm also surprised Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen aren't on the top 10.

Oh, they are better and worse area. But by the standards of "Would I go there at night?" they are all good enough.

(Also lots of cities in Switzerland are probably also all completely safe by that standard.)

I wouldn't hold those cities you mention in high regard... They are festering crime walhallas in their respective countries.

That's almost uniquely USA (and 3rd world countries) problem, many EU cities are just as safe but don't enjoy such charming culture like Tokyo

It’s hard to say a city is safe/not safe as they are so big, and it varies wildly across areas

I've traveled all around the world (~60 countries) including plenty of third world countries and honestly, I feel safer in pretty much all of them than in San Francisco.

Even in other American cities known for crime, I feel safer than in SF, because at least those cities' crime is more contained to "bad neighborhoods" whereas in SF it's everywhere and extremely concentrated downtown.

Granted I haven't spent a ton of time in US flyover country… I hear St. Louis, Tulsa, Baltimore, etc. aren't too nice…

>in some areas is safer

What areas specifically?

The "problematic" parts of Copenhagen and many other European cities are often counted as being part of other smaller suburban municipalities/cities that are too small to appear on such lists.

Nation-wide statistics show that Europe is definitely much safer than the US. However I would rather compare metropolitan areas than cities.

As an example, London has plenty of violent crime, car jackings, robberies, rapes, et al. I don't think very many people would categorize it as an unsafe city per se, there are just areas you blatantly want to avoid. That's true of nearly every major city - indeed, there are only a few major cities where that isn't the case.

> They enjoy unparalleled safety in their cities.

Plenty of countries/cities which don't are pretty safe too (e.g. Eastern Europe these days)

Really? There are worse EU cities regarding security.

I've cross much more dangerous cities, I felt less safer in London than Naples, considering some zones.

Then of course there are some zones you might want to skip, but it's a problem that every major city has. For instance, Marseille is much more dangerous than Naples.

To all those concerned about mafia: mafia is also in Germany, driven by Arabic families. If you follow local news, you'll find out that they control all the drug traffics and robberies. In Berlin they can be seen driving big cars (all men driving Mercedes AMG, Lamborghini or Ferrari have Arabic origins).

I don't agree with being generally safer but NYC is pretty safe. The United States is pretty safe. A lot of the world is pretty safe.

In terms of homicides though the US is less safe than Pakistan, India, Iran and Egpyt and other big countries.

A nice neighborhood in Mexico City is roughly as safe as a nice neighborhood in an average city in the US.

Outside of there, it's a crapshoot. Could be very safe, could be VERY unsafe... In a way you don't see in many parts of the US or EU.
