I've traveled all around the world (~60 countries) including plenty of third world countries and honestly, I feel safer in pretty much all of them than in San Francisco.
Even in other American cities known for crime, I feel safer than in SF, because at least those cities' crime is more contained to "bad neighborhoods" whereas in SF it's everywhere and extremely concentrated downtown.
Granted I haven't spent a ton of time in US flyover country… I hear St. Louis, Tulsa, Baltimore, etc. aren't too nice…
The "problematic" parts of Copenhagen and many other European cities are often counted as being part of other smaller suburban municipalities/cities that are too small to appear on such lists.
Nation-wide statistics show that Europe is definitely much safer than the US. However I would rather compare metropolitan areas than cities.
As an example, London has plenty of violent crime, car jackings, robberies, rapes, et al. I don't think very many people would categorize it as an unsafe city per se, there are just areas you blatantly want to avoid. That's true of nearly every major city - indeed, there are only a few major cities where that isn't the case.
I've cross much more dangerous cities, I felt less safer in London than Naples, considering some zones.
Then of course there are some zones you might want to skip, but it's a problem that every major city has. For instance, Marseille is much more dangerous than Naples.
To all those concerned about mafia: mafia is also in Germany, driven by Arabic families. If you follow local news, you'll find out that they control all the drug traffics and robberies. In Berlin they can be seen driving big cars (all men driving Mercedes AMG, Lamborghini or Ferrari have Arabic origins).
