This is a cool change. I am a bit disappointed at the prominent 'Follow' button on the embed though. That button won't do what users think it will, because it opens the linked account on its home server, which is not the place where you can take the follow action.
It's a very nice feature indeed! Only problem is that it redirects you back to the homepage, and it's been like this since the day I first found out about it. So I guess it's on purpose, to make some fewer people use that feature.
Excellent! I was going to comment about putting a subscribe Call To Action on the homepage -- but went back and noticed you actually have one (the circle button).
Originally I did not recognize the circle as a link... You might play around with the placement of it. Or maybe I am just weird and didn't notice.
I really like the look of the app. It's nice to see established well developed desktop interface concepts applied well.
The first link in the blog post should really link to the home page. A download link is unexpected and unwelcome for someone who's trying to figure out what Ship is for the very first time.
If that's the case, I would recommend changing the link in the top-left corner once you're logged in to take you somewhere other than the home page - maybe to my account or dashboard or something like that.
The button says "Go to [website]" but points to the same page.
I think this has a lot of potential, but it should be easier to offer better UI controls and testing. For example, I may want users to sign into a dummmy account or see specific pages. The home page of a website is rarely good enough to get meaningful impressions.
It's not conceptual, it's UI. The easy way to is copy the address and paste it into the search box on your home instance. Then hit the subscribe button.
This isn't very discoverable at all, though. Hitting the follow button is worse and doesn't tell you the easy way.
Usually they set up a wordpress install for the blog and out-of-the-box the home button links to the blog itself. Changing it usually takes a little bit of tinkering and folks just never get around to it.
Some feedback - please make it easy to visit your home page or atleast link it on your blog posts. While it was interesting, I was curious to know more about what your company did and couldn’t figure out an easy way to visit your main page to find that out.
The top nav bar links to a sign up page on a different domain which doesn’t mention anything about what you guys do.
And the company logo on the blog just links to the main blog page.
I take that back. I thought this was about a clickable logo in general--not about the homepage specifically.
I guess it is ok to not have the logo linking to the homepage from the homepage itself. (Though there are certain sites that I like to have open and click on the logo to refresh the content.)
This is a great change but either it's not fully rolled out yet or it's not enabled when logged out. I still see a cluttered home page when I visit.
It stinks that a user interface improvement this large would require you to log in; hopefully that's just a temporary issue. In the meantime there are scripts, css tweaks, and alternative clients that can make the watching experience cleaner and less distracting, but people shouldn't have to have technical knowledge just to get a clean home menu when visiting the site.
