I've recently launched HN+

https://www.hn.plus

For anyone interested in HN-type forums (with lots of other features we've built)

sort by: page size:

Oh cool, thanks.

I never knew there was a feature in HN that immediately turned it into reddit!

As a tangential point, I run a tool that lets you manage a HN style community - hellobox.co - would love for you to try it out if you like!

https://www.hellobox.co

this seems like a bigger version of the HN community: https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/10438867976349035726...

That sounds really good. Will definitely check it out

Shameless plug: is is my last bookmarklet for HN: http://christopherdebeer.github.com/hnCommentWatcher/

Update: I was a bit let down that you just show the HN page in an iframe, nd dont actually restyle the comments in a user friendly way like in a side bar for the site (which i think would be brilliant)

I created this 3 plugins to create a better personal experience with HN, they are not made to create a nice UI, in fact, it might make it more confusing, but they help me to find more interesting things to read and have a general better experience.

HNTagger: https://bitbucket.org/Duiker101/hntagger

Tag users, there is also a file with some tag ready to be used. I like knowing who am I talking to, like if it's a dev of some company, a marketing person etc..

HNNewest: https://bitbucket.org/Duiker101/hnnewest

Highlights on the /newest page the posts with some comment or more than 1 point. Also highlight Ask HN, Show HN and text posts.

HNReRead: https://bitbucket.org/Duiker101/hnreread

Shows the number of comments/score since you refreshed the page(orange) or when you opened the thread(blue)

There is also the HNBox, which is all of them together: https://bitbucket.org/Duiker101/hnbox als avaible on the Chrome store https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hnbox/bphebkcfkkmdemhbbomehjbopofkhmib

This plugins were created for me but I hope will be helpful for someone else also.

Enjoy.

There's a tool called HelloBox

http://www.hellobox.co

Which lets you create your very own HN-like community. Check it out, you can always start one yourself!

I didn't see it mentioned in the thread, so here's coffee's HN equivalent:

It would definitely be nice to have as part of HN itself. In the meantime there is http://hnnotify.com/

The most useful HN addon is HN Replies by Dan Grossman. You get an email if someone replies to your comment. Simple UI and real value.

I wonder if a discord for HN would be better?

I've been keep track of HN related things people have built and added this also

https://github.com/keithn/HackerNewsCommunity

Hehe, looks like a lot of us have built interfaces for HN threads.

I built one last month for the Freelancing thread: http://hnfreelancer.zacharytong.com/

HN is a link aggregator with comments. It's difficult for the format to be used any other way.

I made HNRelevant, a web extension for HN (https://github.com/imdj/HNRelevant).

The extension adds a section for related discussions for each submission page. Many times, I found myself intrigued by interesting discussions which left me hungry for more and I'd go down a rabbit hole, or maybe it was promising but didn't get enough attention and I'd need to check if there were any related discussions in the past about the same subject.

I found that even though HN is a news aggreagator, many discussions on HN are timeless (just like this here).

I'm proud of it and find the experience and flow to be very enjoyable. It also helps me find great stories that I might not have stumbled across.

That looks really good. I am not familiar with many of the sites on there, but I noticed no way of getting to HN discussions from your site. Do you think some way of reaching the discussion or comments section of some of the feeds would be helpful to others?

I've seen this a bit, and tracked most of it to an old comment in a post asking for what features you'd like to see added to HN thread.

HN doesn't have a share button. But somehow a lot of stuff is shared on this site...

Right, this one and http://www.hnreplies.com/ make HN useful.

there's this: https://www.hnreplies.com I understand it is built by an HN moderator, actually, so somewhat endorsed.
