People know keys, people eventually leak keys. It always happened.

they already had keys.

Why do you think they didn't leak sooner? It's trivial to reverse-engineer the master keys with a few example locks. Also, whenever I see an article about black-market tor sites that lists examples of available contraband, "sets of TSA / (city) master keys" are frequent fliers.

Hopefully their keys did not leak...

The more people who have a copy of a key, the more chances for a copy to be lost or stolen by a bad guy.

Yeah, that makes sense. I automatically assumed you were talking about "secret" keys because of the parent post.

They have their own copies of the keys.

Probably for initial infection it’s random but the negotiation for keys happens between real people.

Thieves must be heartless to go after such desperate targets. But criminals always have ways of justifying things.

Well now we know who pushed the key

But keys cost real money. And people want bragging rights, not money.

The key is often held somewhere in memory, it's just a case of finding it.

At least that's my understanding of how these have been cracked in the past.

Sure, but where do the keys come from?

There is always a chance that the key will somehow get into the wrong hands, regardless of how "good" the organization that controls the keys is.

This is a problem with common thinking these days: " general belief that only some good guys have the keys". I paid for the device, I should get the keys!

Because then other people can change the key without you knowing?

How? Which keys do they trust?

Hence key-signing parties. People are still doing those, aren't they?

A stranger could use your local hardware store to copy your key, and this has been possible for decades.

The average mechanical key user (i.e. the average non-homeless person) certainly knows that someone can duplicate a key given access to the key. But the average key user doesn't know that a mere picture, much less a picture from hundreds of feet away, is sufficient. When was the last time you saw someone hide a key from view while using it? I've never seen anyone do this. I've never done it myself.

Well we all know that law enforcement gets a copy of every safe key made. you know just in case
