If you don't use old mode in a mobile browser, they block off 1/3 of your screen with "Are you sure you don't want to use the Reddit App?" Pretty sure I don't Reddit.
Reddit on mobile browser is the worst experience one can have. A very big chunk of the screen is hidden with "get the app". You click on the mini text and the you need to scroll down to dismiss the bar.
It has become similar with their new design, even on desktop platforms. "click here for old reddit or dismiss" and sometimes the old.reddit.com link has no underline with it, suggesting that a click there won't work.
I stopped using Reddit for a few weeks because of this. I use Reddit almost exclusively on my phone and I don’t need nor want to download a separate web browser just for one site.
But then one day I checked out of habit and I was back in.
But if they want to “ban” me from the site because I visit with my phone’s browser, so be it. Honestly they’d probably be doing me a favor. But I’m not downloading the stupid app.
I use old reddit redirect. If old.reddit ever went away I would stop going to reddit completely, similar to what happened with the digg bar.
I don't use reddit on mobile specifically because I don't download apps on my phone (outside of a few small games such as bejeweled), and I think surfing the internet on the phone is miserable regardless. The only thing I ever crack my browser open for is to look something up while at the grocery store, etc.
Reddit is horrible to use on mobile devices as well. They're trying to force you to download the app, but I'm not interested to download an app to browse a website. I already have a browser.
> On mobile, if you visit the reddit site, they push a "use the app"-banner in your face. Every goddamn time.
It's not at all obvious, but if you go into the settings menu on the top right, you can tell it to not ask you this anymore. It seems to store it in a cookie, so you shouldn't be prompted if you don't use incognito or similar when checking it.
If they retired old.reddit then the only time I would browse reddit would be when I use my phone, which I only do when I have no computer to interact with or before bed.
If they then do the logical thing and block third party apps then I will just stop using reddit completely, because using the official app just isn't worth it.
> Reddit is still accessible on mobile via browsers though
Barely. They’ve aggressively pushed the app on mobile users for years, and they keep moving more and more of the mobile site behind a login screen. For example, you must now make an account to view more than the last few comments on a post on the mobile site.
The reddit web on mobile is a sad experience, before it was possible to shut its continuously asking about installing the app but they removed the option. Now it always asks to use the app when I navigate to reddit. And no, I don't want to use any app to read it.
Your rebuttal is false and the parent is accurate. Reddit will throw up a full screen interstitial on most popular subreddits preventing even viewing and redirect you to download the app. This is on the mobile (not old.reddit desktop-only) site. Their UX is shite and full of dark patterns.
The "new" Reddit mobile web interface got worse (again). I'm logged in and now every time I open the webpage I'm asked if I want to "continue in browser" or "open in app (recommended)". I don't have the app installed and I don't want such dark patterns force me to install it. Previously that happened only to unregistered users.
On mobile, yeah, it's awful. They have absolutely destroyed the mobile experience, especially if you're not logged in. And why would I be logged into reddit on my phone's browser, when I use BaconReader to read reddit?
On desktop though, it's an entirely different experience. I'm always redirected to the old layout, so I don't have the stupid anti-user shenanigans.
It's easy to make fun of UI changes but... reddit on mobile without using their app is near unusable. You can't see all the comments and both the top and bottom of the screen is telling you to use their app.
