Here is a design tip for you: don't take up my screen space with useless shit I can't scroll away from

sort by: page size:

For the love of god, leave scrolling alone.

Off topic: Designers and Developers. Please stop scroll-jacking.

I hate to bikeshed, but the amount of wasted vertical screen space [1] makes me almost a little angry. Web designers: if you think it's a good idea to reimplement basic browser functionality (scrolling), or to emulate the UX of HTML frames, please think again.

Seriously, please stop using such horizontal scrollable layouts. It's a pain to navigate

Stop messing with scrolling.

God forbid we use the scroll bar.

It's awful beyond words, you should never ever mess with the user's scroll. If themes have it just delete the feature entirely.

Please stop trying to reinvent the browser scrollbar on your blog. Can't page down with this junk.

That is quite possibly the most annoying web page I’ve ever had to scroll through. Come on, scrolling is just not one of those things that needs to be “re-imagined”. Focus on the content instead.

It's even worse when it only appears when you're scrolling up. You want to scroll up one line to re-read the sentence that scrolled off screen. Nope, now you have to scroll 50px because the navbar spawned. Oh, it's gone again. Nope, it's back, I didn't even mean to scroll up 1px that time.

It's no wonder my girlfriend makes more than I do as a UX professional. Someone on the team that actually has the users' interest at heart is critical. Else you get these ridiculous break-room ideas that nobody spent more than 5 seconds thinking about.

This is a bad idea. Not only is it useless and take up a lot of space, it now moves as I interact with the page, further distracts me from the content that I'm interested in. Especially egregious on mobile if it pops back up again when I scroll up, then sort of bobs up and down if I press and hold at just the right spot.

>it's alive space that brings the eye to what's happening or what's new/fresh or what's about to go on.

That's the misalignment of interest right there. The devs would love to have their users focus on "what's new", i.e. ads and self promotion. The users give on average zero shits and just want the functionality they came for. I guess we all know which side MS is on.

Please just remove anything that interferes with the scrolling at all.

Please, for the love of God, stop messing with scrolling. JUST STOP.

Let's also not design sites that disable scrolling with middle-click.

Neat article but completely unnecessary scrolljacking. If you pinch zoom in, you can't even pan around normally. Scroll down a bit and then tap the (also completely unnecessary) arrow in the bottom right, and it'll ever.. so.. slowly.. scroll you back to the top.

The web gives bad designers too much rope to hang everyone with.

Agreed. Please leave scrolling alone. It's the one constant we have in the world of unpredictable interfaces.

I strongly recommend not looking directly at large noisy pixel scrolls.

don't ever mess with my scrolling experience

Don't hijack scrolling.
