Is this not referring to headrest mounted displays. The one mounted in the back of the seats?

Probably talking about the in car infotainment system.

> Yaris which has everything on center console

Last time that I drove a Yaris, and that was a few years back, there was a Head Up Display which put a few things against the windscreen, directly in front of the driver.

Just as an FYI, that's intentional because some cars are now shipping with the extended screen for the passenger to control.

In fairness, it's not like they're the only device in the world that mounts on a car dashboard. There's tons of GPS receivers, phone holders, etc. that do the same thing.

Cars (vans mostly) with rear entertainment systems are mostly using discs, I'd guess.

For gods sake.. you think a car made by Sony would manage to remove the tacky bezels, at least on the back of headrest monitors.

Can't understand if it's a stylistic choice or design limitation, but it befuddles me in this day and age

It's an unfinished cabin design. I doubt they're going to leave a monitor sitting in that spot as the end look. Most likely it'll be mounted flush into the dash in some manner.

Yup; in our case it was in the cabin, a little to the left of the steering column.

Cars entertainment system, not car itself

Problem is that a lot of vehicles have displays that stick up like a wart on the dashboard now. Though it would be great if you could reuse the display and just replace the internal components.

I believe the Chrysler Pacifica lets you stream to the rear seat video screens. I’m sure there are others as well.

Dunno, I don't think so.

Streaming music, maps for nav, top down views that integrate numerous camera/utlrasound etc sensors, onstar (and similar), traffic updates for maps, bluetooth connections/app for phone, etc seem common on pretty much all new cars. At least they were in the subaru, honda, bmw, and VW cars I was test driving. A center console mounted screen for entertainment/maps/music is becoming very common on pretty much all new cars I looked at.

My suspicion, particularly with that example, is that this is something they use in their cars to present various interfaces.

That's what we're seeing too. On the dashboard as well.

I wish that they would install proper display and controls instead of this cheap PC monitor in the middle of the car.

A 1980s car dashboard is prior art.

The problem is a lot of these cars don't have head units. They just have all sorts of irregular LCD screens built in to the dash.

It's sadly not very marketable as it happens roughly 15-20 times a year in the US and everyone thinks it won't happen to them. When it was designed as a third party product it was a car-seat based weight detector rather than something that was a direct extension of the car.

I think a little indicator on your car with lights for each seat that is occupied where occupied is done by weight and is able to ignore the weight of a car seat might be a useful portion of an electronic dashboard. Still dashboard real estate is scarce and I'm not sure what indicator we'd be willing to remove to have it. On the whole it still doesn't surprise me that car manufacturers haven't done it.

It only mentioned the digital displays. There may well be analogue, like most cars have.
