Could you tell me, in honest words, what you think would come from the debate? Would it generate any additional information that would allow intelligent people to judge anything about the debated topic? Or do you just want to see a slugfest?

I think they would. People enjoy debate, and there's certainly a huge need for high-quality debate.

I don't know how long of a debate for a given topic are you imagining. I fear this would dilute the number of topics that can be covered.

Imagine a divisive debate, carried on within the context of a humility contest. :)

They'd probably debate that.

Debate.

Imagine a world where we do any of those debate practices on any subject... maybe one day.

Are you saying the debate would go in wider and wider circles, maybe meander around a bit?

Maybe.

But I suspect it would probably descend into goal-post moving or quibbling about definitions.

It's doesn't feel worth the amount of legalistic laying down of rules that it would require to be a fruitful debate.

What do you want to debate?

Why not show the arguments and allow the debate to happen? Maybe we'd all learn something.

Exactly. Might even spawn some good debates

Or we could just debate it, if it matters.

We could always debate the value of debate ;)

debate?

I'd love to see more debate about just this.

Would we be so generous to allow the same kind of debate on any science-related topic.

And which side would you take in that debate?

Like a presidential debate?

I find the idea very interesting. But what if people leaning on one side of the argument stars a debate because the outcome ended up favoring their side?
