Tbf Replit is an online IDE for full stack development, that means that almost any idea you work on Saas dev tooling could be construed as a competitor.
I do not understand ReplIt's business model. In my head I associate them with cloud ides which were all the rage once upon a time but slowly died out. So who is using Repl It these days? They seem to be hiring frequently so I assume they are growing.
We're on a mission to make programming more accessible by building the best, simplest, and fastest coding environment. Repl.it is a place to not only learn and practice programming but also to collaborate and ship applications. It's both exciting that we've been able to build a community of millions of users with a small team and an ambitious plan, and that we're inventing the future of programming.
Replit is doing a lot of interesting work in pioneering user interfaces for AI-enhanced development and finally getting programming off the desktop. Still, it remains to be seen how viable a product that really is.
Repl.it is the first massively open computing platform where anyone, even without even needing an account, can hop on and in seconds start executing code, build and host applications and websites, and collaborate with other people.
Providing a service like this is challenging from all a scaling, security, and billing perspectives. Additionally, supporting the number of languages that we do (https://repl.it/languages) is hard from both a hard systems tooling problem -- we have to build generic protocols for executing, debugging, authoring code, running tests, handling files, etc.
It's a great time to be joining us, we're still 8 full-time people, we reach more than a million coders a month, and we're backed by YC and a16z.
