Remember when Bing was integrated into chatGPT? Now I do about half my searches through Bing.
But, it is unclear whether there is room for advertising in chatGPT the way there is room for ads in search. But I suspect there will somehow be a way!
Currently nobody has a monetizing solution other than ads next to the chat. I think OpenAI will come up with a service that puts ads right into the chat. Head of Ads at Microsoft/Bing already said they're looking at options. Then it would remain free. And with "enshittification" in mind a pro version will eventually include ads, too.
My speculation is that whatever we will be typing into these chat boxes (be it Bing, Bard, or free ChatGPT) will ultimately be used to for ad targeting anywhere on the web and beyond, either in-house (Bing) or via data brokers.
Bing Chat has already shown that injecting advertising into generated content is possible, if paid API usage and ChatGPT Plus subscriptions can't keep the bills paid then there's a whole bunch of enshittification levers that can be pulled to make money: ads, quotas, additional in-page upsells, and locking it down entirely. It's just a matter of keeping the value proposition slightly ahead of competitors.
ChatGPT has the lion's share of name recognition and media buzz but every one of the competitors in this space is probably just waiting for them to misstep so they can step into the spotlight.
seems to me the seo peeps will just step up their game by employing chatgpt to spam everything.
chatgpt search will be mostly useless if it doesn't provide upto date answers which means it has to constantly have the latest news, blogs, press releases feed to it so when you ask for a summary of some event that just happened or some new tech it gives you an answer. the same incentives apply.
Likely there will be a race for it to start recommendating products . Either directly, Bing still has to make money, or indirectly buy trying to influence it into answers with product placement
I don't see how such a product gains any footing in the market when Bing is over there not putting ads in the chatbot itself and just showing some banners. I certainly would instantly switch away from google if they released that.
As a business reality, this is more likely to affect Bing's advertising platform, as it will be able to charge differently for more targeted content that gets placed vertically through chatgpt.
