I had a Galaxy S3 and was a heavy user of Swype. My friends marveled at how fast I could type with it. It was perfect! I recently changed my phone to an S8 and Swype became unusable. It gets almost every second word wrong, so much that I'm thinking of disabling it entirely :(
I swipe heavily (using the original 'swype' app). It's still much faster than the others, and I've tried almost all of them, including the Google keyboard. Also, everyone else who sees me typing using that tries to learn the same. It's really more convenient than traditional touch typing.
My issue with Swype-style - after having used it for about 8 years before switching to a phone with a keyboard (Android Blackberry) - is that having to wait for each word to confirm it got the right one is where the slowdown is. Touch-typing means I can keep going without confirming, because when I do mis-type, I can feel that my finger wasn't positioned correctly without having to do any visual confirmation.
Based on reactions from co-workers though, it seems I'm much more efficient at touch-typing than most of them, even on a fullsize keyboard. And the experience does translate to a physical phone keyboard, even at the smaller size, so that may well be where some of the disconnect is.
Note also when touch-typing on my phone, I get the full speed by using both thumbs, not just one.
Really? I can type exceptionally quickly and actually using the android swipe typing. At least as good as the original Swype. Sure it's not as fast as a physical keyboard, but I'm not writing a novel on this device. (3 typos made writing this)
I haven't used Swype regularly. is Swype massively actually massively faster when it comes to two handed typing?
I can easily see the performance difference for one handed typing, but I'm having trouble seeing power users reliably typing emails realizing much faster results with Swype.
Since I've been using Swype on Android, every "normal" keyboard on a touch device seems primitive. Even the iphone/ipod keyboard to type emails, text messages is to slow.
+1 for swype. It's actually the thing that absolutely keeps me from considering an iPhone going forward (at least until Apple adopts it). I'm 3x faster than I ever was even on a physical keyboard.
I'm glad it's not just me that's seen Swype getting progressively worse! Either you have to really emphasize what letters you want, or you give up and type it out. I'm about finished with it.
Honestly, I said the same thing until I switched to Android and was able to optimize that for myself. Being able to use something like Swype is pretty huge and makes me faster and less error-prone.
