I use Enpass which doesn't sync to cloud and can by synced locally (over LAN) between devices, for exactly this reason.

You don't need 'the cloud' to do that. Look into Syncthing. It does depend on an outside "discovery server" by default to enable syncing outside of your LAN, but you can run your own.

Do you know how the non-cloud aka computer-to-computer syncing done? Particularly, is the data cached in some intermediate server? I love the idea and would use it if the answer to the above question is No!

Thanks for the tip! I will look into it. I am curious to find out how it syncs without servers. (I assume this is not an incredibly hard problem but we are just not used to doing things without "the cloud" these days)

It could sync from the cloud.

I use 1Password + Resilio (formerly BTSync) in local sync only mode.

It's kind of a pain in the ass sometimes (I can only sync at home) but the upside is no cloud component and it syncs nicely and automatically between multiple machines.

For mobile devices, I use the Wifi sync mode.

Ahh.. so you want to only sync locally between devices.. or you want it to support your special cloud-protocol so you can run your own cloud-server... . But wouldn't the second part be cheating, not naming it cloud-based? :)

I have to concur with the others. Sync to the cloud is pretty much the last feature I would want; that would make this device forbidden by default without IT approval in pretty much any business or other professional environment I can think of. Imagine if a doctor bought one and took notes on your device. Is your cloud storage solution HIPAA compliant?

Save the notes to local storage and let me transfer them to a computer locally.

I think it has to complete the cloud sync first before it syncs across the local network. It will take advantage of the LAN, but not as immediately as you'd like.

That could work, hopefully it's a 1 way sync though. I don't want all of the contents of my cloud storage to be pulled down to my server.

I would definitely be interested in something like this. Most apps sync with either some proprietary cloud or at best Dropbox. Universal as Dropbox is, I just don't trust it.

An even better solution would be to sync all my devices over ssh. In that sense, I already have a private "cloud".

Simple syncing is what ownCloud does. Of course technically a server is inbetween, so it’s not directly between devices. LAN sync is requested sometimes, but currently not a priority.

Please do let us know about the things you miss – on our issue tracker at http://github.com/owncloud/core/issues And if you use IRC you’re welcome in #owncloud-dev (freenode).

And be sure that we have a lot of improvements lined up for ownCloud 7 which will come out in a few weeks.

EDIT: Also, if you have specific feedback on ownCloud’s usability and design let me know, I work on that.

The usecase for this is not clear to me. Syncing is already done via the cloud, sharing as well. It's cool, but what's more to it?

The cloud sync is optional. You could use the SSH access you get when connecting to it over USB, and possibly roll your own backup solution.

I second Enpass. There is no online server involved. Syncing can be done with proprietary cloud solutions, Wi-Fi, or just manually using files.

But what I love best is their payment plans: the have the rare option for lifetime plans.

I've migrated to Bittorent Sync: http://getsync.com it's a "no cloud" solution. They don't see your data.

I'm happy with it but I do have a NAS at home that serves as a "always on" sync point for my other devices.

We do support LAN-only sync (i.e. on an isolated ad-hoc network), which is what I think you're asking for :)

But can you have it sync automatically in the same way with your own private cloud? That would be really awesome.

Well, the people in the first category will usually be smart enough to setup a sync without using an external "cloud service".

The best thing about Enpass, in my opinion, is how they approach syncing. I don't want another cloud sync service in my life, I already use one that I like. Enpass is smart to let me use the service I already have instead of forcing me into their own service.
