Does Tesla still have sonar and radar? I thought everything but cameras were removed a few years ago

sort by: page size:

Right, though IIRC Tesla at least has now stopped using radar.

This particular Tesla was pre 2021 so it should have both radar and cameras.

Radar, ultrasonic proximity sensors, and/or LIDAR, presumably.

Tesla has famously removed all radar/ultrasonic sensors from their newer cars in favor of a purely camera-based system.

Current Teslas are already fitted with radar, though Tesla wants to remove it from future models.

Tesla also has a radar.

Do Teslas have radars? I thought their self driving tech was based solely on conventional video cameras?

Found:

> Beginning with deliveries in May 2021, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for the North American market will no longer be equipped with radar.

from https://www.tesla.com/support/transitioning-tesla-vision, so radar-less is a new thing. That Tesla should have had a radar unless bought recently.

This is because those cars are using radar, but Tesla is removing radar from their cars to rely solely on cameras.

Not to mention radar, which every Tesla has.

They kind of do... Tesla uses 12 ultrasonic (sonar) sensors (and cameras). GM uses radar (and cameras).

All Teslas are "vision-based" now. They no longer use the RADAR even in cars that have it.

This is probably so they can have only one software build rather than supporting one with and one without RADAR. And also so that they can say the RADAR isn't needed anyway.

Depends on what year it was. Tesla eliminated the ultrasonic sensors, moving to cameras completely.

Does Tesla even have a radar?

It did rely on radar when the video was taken. Tesla stopped relying on radar on models 3 and Y with April 2021 release.

Their radar removal was baffling. There were rumors (perhaps Musk's tweets?) of Tesla investigating 4D imaging radars to replace their really old Continental radars, but they suddenly decided to remove it altogether. Many have attributed it to chip shortage and yet again Musk using vision-only as an excuse for removal.

Teslas made since October 2014 have a radar.

Tesla has radar but it is disabled? why is that?

They removed the radar last year on the Model 3 and Y.

Tesla dropped radar because they are moving to vision only systems like how the Comma AI/OpenPilot works. Vision models are superior to radar since radar can't detect stopped obstacles.
