The British Medical Association would like a word. They are a union, despite the name. UK junior doctors and consultants are currently on strike!

Doctors absolutely do have unions, Google the British medical association, or many others across the world

Is there a medical union?

The BMA and RCN do act in the capacity of a trade union in a lot of ways though.

Sounds like a doctor's union. Is that a thing?

Doctors don't have unions. They have guilds (or even better cartels a la AMA).

Doctors aren’t unionized anywhere I know of. Do you have an example of a doctors’ union?

Does the union actually do much for them? I know in a lot of blue collar work unions are actually serious, and can do strikes and stop a business in it's tracks if the workers feel they are being mistreated. Why does that not happen with doctors? I've not heard about it happening, anyway.

Health care professionals do form unions and go on strike sometimes, which can be seen as a way of looking out for each other.

You're thinking of self-regulating professional body rather than a trade union. Unions fight for pay and working conditions against employers, professional bodies represent the considered opinion of the profession and self-regulate their members, like doctors and barristers.

What unions do doctors and lawyers belong to? Never hear of unions for these professions in the US.

There is also a thing called unions.

Maybe have a look at the list here: https://www.tuc.org.uk/britains-unions

* Association of Educational Psychologists

* British Air Line Pilots’ Association

* FDA ("The union for senior public sector managers and professionals")

* Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association

* Prospect, the professionals' union

There are a lot more listed here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/public-list-of-ac...

In the US, while the AMA is technically a trade group and lobbying organization, it's goals/methods are similar to those of a union. It's often referred to as the Doctor's Union.

There are most definitely physician unions, especially in government-operated clinics which are often union shops. I was involuntarily in SEIU for a number of years as a result, though I thought striking was unethical for a doctor myself. See also UAPD and NAVAPD.

Not a "trade union"; a "professional association," like the AMA or ADA.

The AMA is not a collective bargaining association, just a professional organization. When doctors unionize, they become part of other unions: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/13/business/economy/doctors-...

A trade union perhaps.

A union.

It's called a union.
