My memory was that CI was kinda new in 2000. What were you using? Hudson came out in 2005. Cruise Control was 2001, which was we adopted to replace our hand cranked shell scripts on CVS hooks.

Oh, God, thank you! I've been hunting and hunting for something to replace CruiseControl. I had no idea this existed. Is there an easy way to turn this into a CI?

Are you talking about basic cruise control that's been around since forever?

In the 90s I drove a Dodge Spirit from Florida to NY using cruise most of the way - the cruise adjustment was incredibly responsive.

Ever heard of cruise control?

Yeah, I stopped using cruise control years ago too - I moved to Los Angeles.

The initial cruise control software was an afterthought, that ran on spare cpu cycles taken from the door lock control system.

Do you use cruise control?

Adaptive cruise control is also not 'Regular cruise control'.

I actually like cruise control, since it's use case is very specific, and always works: keeping a certain speed.

I'm interested in trying out one of the current adaptive cruise control systems. I pretty much got out of the habit of using cruise control. Most of the roads I drive on have enough traffic that I find cruise control leads to me prioritizing maintaining a constant speed rather than sensibly staying in the flow of traffic. I.e. shifting lanes rather than slowing down a couple mph.

It's really Cruise Automation, not legacy GM.

You don’t see the headlines because cruise control is an old technology. There were news about people misusing it when it became mainstream.

Do you have the foggiest idea what “cruise control” systems are capable of these days?

I think people probably said that about cruise control when it was introduced, and that turned out okay.

So basically the intelligent cruise-control that Mercedes developed in the early 90s?

Cruise control works fine for this.

I'm pretty much out of the habit of using cruise control even with newer adaptive cruise control because it really encourages maintaining a constant speed even on roads that are really too busy to allow it.

I always assumed it was similar to cruise-control insofar as it can be turned off?

You mean Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC)?

I suspect many of the same arguments being made in this thread would have been made about cruise control when it was first introduced.
