Particularly when the website is working quite well already.

How does that make the website better though?

More people taking up website building and creation, it is nice to see that it can be done easily with a service like this. I think it adds to the accessibility, not everyone understands the tricky part of building a website and most want to do it fast, so o I think this feature is pretty cool

Question Answers Websites have always been a hit, which is the very reason many people keep launching new ones. The best part is that the script comes with preinstalled categories and allows you to setup Search Engine Friendly pages.

Infact the familiarity of seeing a similar site before is a plus to get users comfortable on my site.

Don't forget that a site being able to be managed & stay in business is also good for users.

They dun even need to do anything except put a link to their new service on their main domain and it already gives them an instant boost. Which they already do for 99% of all their related services.

It gets websites more clicks.

Ya, one of the great aspects / hidden benefit of a service like this is how it makes the lives of web developers easier because they have a reliable service they can refer clients to when they don't want to handle those pesky small maintenance tasks anymore.

They did something that caused them to stand out and become wildly successful. If that something is caused by the site being more usable or somehow easier, then they have added something to the business model.

I think those other things can be worded in a positive way though. That could make it worth it?

Optimized website. Improved loading time by .3 seconds on average for all users. Created cleaner and more efficient design and implementation. Etc...

Or 3) It's working so well that people are gravitating towards it rather than clicking on paid links (most probable reasoning).

It's probably a good way to introduce users to new websites that they might find interesting.

The service is technically mindblowning, A good way to let clients or the marketing department fiddle with their site copy while leaving us to get on with actual development work.

I am not sure I agree with your first point. It seems the most frequent case is that a user wants to access content right away. Regardless of how much "better" the native experience might be, its a lot of hoops to jump through to fulfill the immediate need.

I certainly can't argue that it does yield positive business results under certain scenarios, but for the average user it seems to injure common web experiences.

That may be why they start, but nobody would come back if the site wasn't so terribly useful, concise and easy to navigate.

The fact that a lot of people like the feature and want to use it for starters. If they can sell enough ads to make the hosting worthwhile, they have a successful company I'd assume.

Having an attractive website can be very helpful. Between two otherwise identical websites, the more attractive one will probably get more use, especially with certain target markets. Of course, it's also possible to get carried away. One needs to also pay attention to utility, load time, maintenance costs, etc. Ultimately, its really a matter of priorities.

This is a plus, more than anything.

The ability to easily seed any community-driven site is a godsend. Whether they can monetize them or not, it helps jumpstart the activity so they can then focus on bringing new, outside users that can then (hopefully) be monetized.

It solves one half of the chicken-egg problem.

The Web Platform will be always criticised and that's a good sign. So many eyes on it are improving it much faster than other platforms.
