It's not really the best, though. The article cited to back that up compares Google only to Apple maps and almost entirely focuses on building shapes which add little useful information to the map. Proper street geometry seems more important to begin with.
No, it absolutely doesn't.
However there were maps before Google Maps, not even bad ones. The greatness of Google Maps: a, satellite images; b, near-live traffic data; c, geotagged images. Oh, wait, the third is gone, and the second is not thanks to Google but to a startup they bought ;)
You might be right, but most of those reasons don’t actually matter. To be frank, the only things I miss when not using Google maps is their highlighting of high activity areas.
Both maps have similarly good cartography where it matters. In most countries, both maps are similarly accurate.
Hadn't heard about that. Still works better than Google maps, though - not that I'm making much of a claim by saying so. I cannot imagine what the designers of the current Google maps site were thinking.
