I've tried a couple of time using ChatGPT on a coding assignment (because.... if I can NOT do it, better right?) and both times I got garbage and ended up doing the coding assignment myself.

Is anyone actually using ChatGPT to help them with some mundane coding tasks? If so, what?

Is chatGPT really that helpful to code ?

I personally find ChatGPT extremely useful for coding.

Agree. I haven't seen any examples of ChatGPT that might make me want to use it for my job. Yes if you are an inexperienced programmer (or just not very competent) then it might help you get something working I guess?

Do y'all really use ChatGPT for coding questions? Every time I have tried, the answer I get is entirely wrong, and I end up going back to either first party documentation, or Stack Exchange.

Can you expand on your statement that ChatGPT cannot write code? That doesn't match my experience with it.

chatGPT isn't helping anyone write code unless they are writing the simplest school assignments.

Actual programming is more complex and involves tons of non-code logic.

Okay. But on the other hand, we know that ChatGPT can be an enormous help for all kinds of programming tasks. Granted, your experience was ridiculous, but why give up so easily?

I think ChatGPT works nice if you treat it like a coworker that you nag on a specific problem.

Sometimes it gives you the right answer right away, sometimes he tells you the name of a function wrongly, sometimes it fucks up, but it still is better than going alone if you check its answers and give it some feedback.

But I wouldn't trust it to write code for me tout-court, at least for now

Can anyone recommend some more articles about this ? Specifically, using chatgpt to write code? The more in depth, the better.

I've tried it. It's truly incredible what it can produce, but it often produces the wrong thing. Furthermore, it cannot do logical inferences, and it cannot do mathematics.

In short, the code it produces has to be reviewed by programmers who know what they're doing. Sometimes that speeds things up to have it produce the code and we review it, but sometimes it slows things down and it's easier to just write it yourself.

I see ChatGPT as an extremely powerful tool that can boost a programmer's productivity, but despite its incredible capability it cannot be trusted in ways that we can trust human programmers.

I was dismissive at first, but I have to admit chatgpt brings a lot of value to programmers. It saves me a lot of time remembering some APIs or syntax for languages I use only occasionally. It's sometimes wrong, but for programming, it's easy to detect and fix.

But it's more problematic for non-programming questions where it's hard to check the answer without googling it.

Every time I've tried chatgpt I've been shocked at the mistakes. It isn't a good tool to use if you care about correctness, and I care about correctness.

It may be able to regurgitate code for simple tasks, but that's all I've seen it get right.

I'm surprised with this response. I myself have found it extremely useful and ChatGPT has saved me tons of time with programming and non-programming tasks.

You're holding it wrong.

ChatGPT does not do your job for you.

It is an assistant - you have to do the debugging and adapting and understanding and verification and fixing.

And, ChatGPT is better at coding in programming languages that have more training material, so the more popular the languages, the more likely ChatGPT is to give a meaningful result.

chatGPT is an amazing tool. It has really increased the speed of my coding. Why do you hate it?

How does it compare to using code assistants AIs?

I have used chatgpt a bit for coding tasks, and it is alright. Kind of like getting a not that smart student to do something, and repeatedly prodding them to do it right.

You are agreeing with OP. You could evaluate the quality of ChatGPT because you could write the code yourself.

I have used chat gpt. It is very useful. I am in college and I do coding only in python but most of the college internship/placement test does not accept python code. So, previously it was very difficult to me but now I can convert it into any desired language. The best things is happening in the world.
