I love this "X in not the world comment" while others are giving more and more evidence of the opposite. Care to give actual evidence, like, I don't know, this Statisa survey (https://www.statista.com/outlook/tmo/software/productivity-s...) because you've now looked farcical. Even looking at African results (which is a relative greenfield), it seems that Microsoft has a sight lead here (https://www.statista.com/outlook/tmo/software/productivity-s...).

Edit: Indonesia is the largest market which has Google beat Microsoft (https://www.statista.com/outlook/tmo/software/productivity-s...). India (due to Zoho) and China (due to... locally-specific software like Kingsoft (aka WPS) et al.) took a large chunk but on Microsoft-Google tussle MS still beats Google (especially in China where Google doesn't really operate).

As a reminder, Microsoft is the largest company in the world and has a 25% larger marketcap than Google.

I find it funny that so many people think Microsoft was "stopped" by Google. They adapted and they are stronger now than in the 90s as a business.

Yes, you beat me to this. The premise of the article is bogus. Both IBM and Microsoft are doing well. I also checked in WolframAlpha http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=microsoft,+google,+ibm I like the way it returns a well-designed summary. I'll try to use it more.

In terms of market share, Microsoft beats Google handily. In terms of year-over-year revenue growth, Microsoft is also beating Google, although Google's growth is better than I had expected.

Well it seems like the biggest winner over google is Microsoft?

Microsoft not only is still around, it has a 25% higher market cap than Google.

Correcting my comment, Google has apparently undercut Microsoft recently.

Microsoft used to be the biggest software company in the world; not anymore. Google innovates; microsoft doesn't innovate anymore. Search is to the web what window is to the desktop. The desktop is dead, everything is on the web now. Goog controls 60% of the search market share; MSN barely controls 10%. Microsoft is doing everything possible to catch google in search; goog doesn't care about PC operating system. IBM has a market cap of $160 biilion, and $100 billion revenue, but who cares. When was the last time IBM did something to make your life easier? Cisco designs, manufactures and sells Internet protocol (IP). That's not software; that's IT.

I remember a time in which Google could do no wrong in the public eye, times sure have changed. THough equally back then, Microsoft was the baddie everybody loved to hate and today, well - I do wonder if public perception of Microsoft has surpassed Google. My gut feeling says it kinda has. Quick google(ironic I know) shows that is also the case.

What the article misses is the essential core: Microsoft is the Big Evil. Only Google really competes in that space. The others might like to compete, but Apple is too stand-offish, Amazon too random, Facebook too inept, Russia too old.

Microsoft and Google are always on the lookout for the next bigger Evil. Google eagerly sheds anything that turns out not to be It. Microsoft is slower at that, not giving up as easily, and often late to the party, but sometimes things finally work out for them better than could have been expected (Xbox). The goal is literal World Domination, and odds are one or the other will achieve it. Younger generations won't even remember when they didn't already have it, or be able to imagine a world where they don't.

Well the post we're discussing has some hard data. :)

But generally speaking when I talk to AI experts they all agree that for the services that Google actually has, they are better, with MS being #2.

Don't worry, Microsoft kills more products and services than Google ever will and does it with a higher cadence.

How so? It's Microsoft that's making pretty bold claims based on these numbers, not Google.

First IBM, now Google.

Microsoft really is the world's greatest number two.

In South America, Microsoft brand is waaaaay stronger than Google's for businesses of all sizes. Google is viewed more as a consumer brand.

...and Microsoft has more power than Google at the moment

Microsoft at least sells real products that should be designed, produced and supported. Google sells, figuratively speaking, air, and redirects the profits to "own the world" by crushing the competition in other areas. Google undoubtedly has some decent products as well (Android, Google Workspace) but this is a drop in the ocean.

Look at the videos on the right, they compare Microsoft's products to Google's.

Google is the dominate search because it is just a lot better. That was true over Altavista and true today. Saying anything otherwise is ridiculous.

Heck MS owns PC and down to tiny share with Bing. Look at browsers in 2016 we had 300 million leave and mostly go to Google.
