I was not referring to the flag, but the downvotes, which indicate that a majority of users feel your comment does not add to the discussion.

Flags are roughly equivalent to downvotes.

Fair enough, that was harsh. But it does annoy me when people treat the flag button as a downvote button.

Flags are not downvotes.

Sorry, yes, flags. I mis-spoke myself - there is indeed no down-voting of submissions, and I was referring to the disproportional effect of flags on a submission's ranking.

I thought flags weren't downvotes though...

[flag] and [downvote]

I hope you know there's a downvote button you can use instead of a flag.

Sure. Do you have a better theory for the downvotes and flag then?

The flag is the result of brigading, and means absolutely nothing to me. And you are being disingenuous. Consider this my final reply.

Flags are supposed to make the article go away. You end up with a dead thread with your comment, which is just noise.

The 'flag' link would have a similar effect to a downvote.

This is what the 'flag' link on the comments are for. Along with the downvote link.

I didn't think that I should use flag as a simple downvote.

Careful, I got buried by the downvote and flag brigade for pointing that out.

I imagine also, that plenty of HN readers use “flag” as a mega-downvote, for articles they don’t like or are offended by or whatever. Since there is no downvote for articles (only for comments), the “flag” is the only way for readers to try to bury one.

Flags aren't exactly downvotes, but they push things from the front page. I've seen people in several thread voice that they're growing weary of this issue and think many of the stories submitted on it aren't relevant to HN.

Flags are not super-downvotes. Please stop abusing them. You have quite a reputation for this kind of abusive behavior, both on and off HN.

I don't remember ever seeing a flag link.. so have never downvoted.

But I do upvote stuff I like and especially stuff I think is being censored by group think... so that could explain why my flag priviliges where never given or taken away before I could notice it..

commenting on it. i saw a suggestion that moderators would remove a flag if it had more comments than flag votes.

unfortunately so far this post only has 3 on topic comments. the rest are about the title or the flag
