really? unless they're jamming it, how would that happen?

Technically it's not really jamming. It's not shutting down the frequency, it's just resetting every connection. It's a denial of service attack.

Wouldn't a jammer do the thing?

Can't they just jam the frequencies instead?

Wouldn't that effectively be jamming the AP at that point?

That'd be illegal, so I kinda doubt it. Not to mention that jammers are pretty easy to detect with the right equipment so it'd be fairly easy to prove if they were doing something like that.

I think it's just a very large area and jamming is far from fool proof.

That's my understanding as well, but they could try some surreptitious methods that would stop shy of using an actual jammer.

Nevertheless, it's still possible to jam (see LightSquared). I actually think this is how Iran did it.

which could probably be knocked out by a simple jammer

Selective jamming like that is really hard to do, verging on impossible.

I know it's part of the "CIA" stuff, but I don't see it as a vulnerability in this specific case. Jamming affects all devices, not just "secure" ones.

Also, there is no countermeasure against it, which makes it even less a security vulnerability.

They can jam the other frequencies so that they aren't available.

Maybe it's the ham radio jamming that causes it? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27857290

I'm guessing, but that might be a few orders of magnitude more expensive than just using a jamming device.

Uhm, this thing jams with ultra-sound and not with radio waves. Are you sure we have laws against that too?

Wouldn't surprise me either way.

Jamming is akin to a Denial of Service attack. It disrupts the channel. Cryptography cannot solve it.

Jamming is not a relevant term.

Interference is, and it is illegal.

It's not jammed, it's dealing with a high noise floor and a weak signal.

You can only do so much to identify your own signal when it's smeared over a trillion water droplets.

Anti-jamming is as illegal as jamming, unfortunately.
