average cost for an apartment in Berlin is apparently around 5.100/m2 and rent is around 11/m2, so back of the napkin math pretty much checks out

1000 euros for rent seems absurdly low. I don't think this is true in Berlin anymore. If you have a family, rents are around 2k.

Damn, are rents in Berlin over 5000 euros/5000 dollars? Must be nuts.

Average rent in Berlin is not 1000 eur...Oh, I see they say it's for 85 m^2 in the city center. That's extremely roomy for a single person or a couple.

Just to provide numbers: I pay about $650 for a two-room apartment about 15min by subway from Mitte, where I study, and I sublet the smaller room.

I end up paying a bit less than what my classmates pay for rent on average. This is still considered expensive by people who have been living in Berlin for just few years more. The rents are still rising since many people are coming to Berlin at the moment; and have been quite high in hip districts like Prenzlauer Berg for a while, but there is definitely no comparison to many other large cities in Europe like London (and none to the Bay Area at all, where you can literally end up paying $700 for a room shared with a stranger, next to the gap in general living expenses).

Wow. It's quite possible to make more than 60K in Berlin (in Euro's) while paying around 400-500 for an apartment. Crazy how much difference there is between cities.

Berlin's values have risen to the point where rents are on average 10 euros per square meter.

You can rent a 100 sqm for only 1000 euros per month!!!!

You can't get 40 sqm for that same amount in Paris.

Berlin isn't anywhere near as expensive as you seem to think. Housing costs seems to be at around half of London's level.

1000 to 1250 EUR for a 900 Sqft apartment.

If you think renting in Berlin is expensive, check out Copenhagen. I know a few people living in Berlin, rent is 60-100% more expensive here.

Berlin is still extremely cheap. You can get fairly large 1BRs in nice, central areas neat Mitte for 400-500 EUR or even less. Larger apartments are not much more expensive. You can still find a largeish 2BR below 1000 EUR.

In Berlin apartments are absurdly cheap. You can live on < 1000 euros a month nicely. Contrast that with SF where you have your media $3700 a month apartment!

In terms of average rental price It is very expensive for Berlin. I pay 750 all inclusive in a better location for the same size.

The kicker: got my contract signed five years ago.

There’s a stop on rent increases for a reason.

tbh this is a very bad example. $300 (247€) for 570 square-foot (53m²) are just not realistic for a city like Berlin. The real price for such an appartment (in that district) is around 700-800€.

Not to be "that guy" with the unpopular opinion here, but I'm not even sure if the landlord can even cover the costs for the apartment from what she's paying.

Actually, living in Berlin feels like double the costs listed in that article... somehow

€500 for an apartment in Berlin? Are they really that cheap?

Finding a flat in Berlin could be challenging. The prices are still way lower than SF, London or Paris. Two of us are sharing a pad in a pretty central location and pay 850 euros including bills and all.

Also, 7714 Euros is expensive (it's more than I pay for a year's rent in a small appartment in Berlin for instance)

I've heard Berlin is very expensive. I guess it's overblown like some other places I've lived that have a reputation for being "very expensive": if you're really looking, you can find affordable options, but the reporting data is being mostly skewed by outrageously expensive outliers.

For rents? There is a map available here: http://interaktiv.morgenpost.de/mietkarte-berlin/#2-1650

It's in German but it should be still fairly easy to understand. Basically average rent for a 72m^2 two bedroom apartment with a new constract is somewhere between 815€ and 1100€ within the SBahn ring.

If you are willing to share an apartment (which students generally do in Germany), you can usually get by with 300-400€ per month for rent.

What apartment can you still get for less than 640 Euros in Berlin today?
