They do. In an episode of the After Dark (called Pamphlet) Dan talks a lot about 5by5, the equipment he uses and various other things, including addressing questions about whether hosts get paid. He says, in short, that if you hear a sponsor on the show then the host is getting paid.
I've been curious about that myself. You say that Mike and Katy paid to be on 5by5. How do you know this? I would assume that the arrangement would simply to have shared a portion of the sponsorship money with 5by5.
They get paid. Dan talks about it occasionally, around talking about FreshBooks, I think.
No idea how much, but I think it was David Smith of Developing Perspective that said a week of DF sponsorship was $7K and 5by5 $5K? Sure at least the latter must depend on the show. Plus I'm probably mixing things up. Episode 42?
They're "sponsored by", just like some YouTubers do. So if your target audience is significant, you can choose to include something from a sponsor in return for a payment.
I wonder who could tell if the sponsored content was seen or not seen by any viewers... As far as I can tell the content creator gets their share once they reference the sponsor segment.
From what I have heard, sponsorships are well worth for the creators. Usually bringing in at least the amount that YT otherwise gave them, and often more.
Although that doesn't sound like a bad idea, that is unfortunately not what he was talking about.
By sponsors he meant patrons that get a perk of accessing screencasts when they subscribe (sponsor him).
All I know is that Tim Ferriss, who is running a very successful podcast too, is asking for $7k to $12k per episode from a sponsor. He has up to two sponsors per episode.
