I really don't understand people like this. Bolsonaro has conceded and traveled to Florida, so what do they want to achieve? I think they just revel in drama and like provoking political conflicts for funsies...
It’s a sad state of affairs for Brazil. Electing a right winged, ill equipped, ignorant nobody in order to remove the most corrupt political party in the history of Brazil.
Some context: Lula currently has 41% of voting intentions (against Bolsonaro's 26%) [1]. He was elected president twice, from 2003 to 2010.
He's a very contested figure in Brazil. On the one hand, he earned popularity for creating social welfare programs such as Bolsa Família [2]. On the other, he's been involved in various corruption scandals, including the Mensalão vote-buying scandal [3] and the Petrobras scandal [4], one of the biggest the world has seen.
Thank you, I knew people hate on Bolsonaro and the like and that the elections there are coming this weekend but that shouldn't be enough reason to want an entire country to "be gone". Suffice is to say that I was confused.
Note: Trump's call for postponing the election is exactly the same thing. Evidence they have no interest in constitutional democracy and will, at the earliest possible moment, impose total control on the country.
Brazil's politics continue to be a mess. Lula, the newly elect president, was formerly convicted for corruption and then had the supreme court set aside his conviction. Bolsonaro has also committed multiple crimes and tried to the Trump election denial-ism tactics.
I am one of the suspended account. Yesterday was election day in Brazil, but I didn't manifested any political positions. Imagine how hard was for Brazilians to think about why this has happened.
It is election year in Brazil. The opposition has been portraying this as an example of bad taste of the president (by the way, he has has been insinuating there will be a coup on the independence day -- and it wont be shocking if he try).
I dislike Bolsonaro but I find it ironic that the current president (Lula), a convicted criminal, was not barred from office but Bolsonaro, who was never convicted, has been barred.
The political nature of superior court in Brazil is disgusting and will destroy the democracy.
If Bolsonaro had not made fun of covid victims and needlessly spilled hate on every other word that came from his mouth, he'd be the current president of Brazil.
A moderate right wing candidate will likely win for 2026, just like an hypothetical moderate Bolsonaro would have won last year.
> I lost another family member yesterday. A young mother of 2 girls.
I'm deeply sorry for your loss.
> the military government will start to fudge the numbers even further
Just to clarify to those who aren't familiar with the political scene in Brazil, we don't actually have a military government in the sense that the armed forces are not in power. Our democratically elected president Jair Bolsonaro [1] is however a former retired military officer, and his running mate Hamilton Mourão, our VP, a retired Army General [2].
Bolsonaro is a polarizing and controversial politician, his views and comments can be described as far-right and populist in nature and draw both praise and criticism in Brazil. He has several times openly shared his supporting views on the (U.S.–supported) Brazilian military dictatorship.
His popularity has been severely affected by his hanlding of the covid-19 pandemic. But he still enjoys a large and "loyal" support base.
And Lula isn't? He claimed he was innocent, absolved of any wrongdoing. The actual judges involved in his corruption case publicly corrected him on that point and then they were censored by the TSE.
You're happy to see Bolsonaro go? I'm sad to see this criminal being ushered in.
