Only paranoid geeks refuse to enable Javascript when prompted. ;)

For awhile there I'd surf with JS off, but enable them when I get to a site I want to see.

Now though, every site seems to have JS as a requirement so I don't even bother. It was becoming a hassle.

sort by: page size:

It's not because I dislike JS the language that I disable it.

And, I do enable JS when I am on a familiar / trusted / interesting site. I definitely won't enable it on an unfamiliar / blank looking website.

Aaaand that's why I always have JS disabled by default.

Hardly foolproof, but 95% of the time it truly doesn't improve my web experience.

I havent had js on by default in years. Using a js enabled browser is a drastically worse experience.

suckless surf lest you enable js with a hotkey on a per-process basis if you really want it for something, but 90% of the time, I just close the tab that wants to waste my time.

Yet people laugh at me for being a paranoid silly tin-foil-hat nerd if I tell them that I browse with Javascript disabled by default and if a site requires it I am more likely to simply close the tab and move on before I enable it.

Hah, the only reason I had it off was because I was testing my own website's "you require javascript to view this site"'s page and had forogotten to turn it back on.

I never surf without javascript, it breaks almost every web page I frequent.

I have javascript as a requirement to use my service and nobody complains.

Cheers.

Not trolling, I really don't understand: why would you disable JS when browsing the web?

I also surf without the Javascript enabled. It's much safer and faster that way. I suggest everybody to try that for a longer period of time before opining.

Most of the pages I visit function without Javascript. The most of sites where it doesn't that I know of are *.blogspot sites managed by Google.

the point is it makes enabling js slightly just a click more annoying, which force you to unconsciously use sites that work fine without.

you seen to spend time here, so you'd pay the security price and that's it.

not having js on by default is for the 95pct of domains you hit everyday to read a single paragraph and never return.

Exactly. I never understood all these "I don't enable js" comments. You kinda usually don't need to disable js on sites that are usable without js. And if you feel the urge to disable it, it is most likely that without js it's an empty page anyway.

I have JavaScript disabled by default and enable it on my bookmarks and when necessary on random new websites I visit.

I have no problem turning on JS for a web app. I understand Google Maps just couldn't really work how it's expected to without JS. Same for web email clients, or games, or office suits.

But if your "app" is just a progressively-enhanced list of posts (e.g., a blog), there is no justification for forced JS usage. Sorry Mastodon.

Running JS is a privilege for those with the computing power (or battery capacity) to spare, and turns the browser into the biggest risk vector on whatever machine that browser is installed on.

I keep JS disabled by default and only enable it in certain situations. If your site doesn't work without JS and I try to view it I am probably just going to leave.

When I browse the web, I disable JS by default. In overwhelming majority of the cases, it makes everything so much faster and nicer.

Yet another reason to disable Javascript when surfing. Sure - disabling JS might break a few sites, but it's a price I am willing to pay

this is why i browse with js disabled by default. i can enable what i need, but that's a small percentage of what's out there.

I exclusively surf with javascript disabled by default. I only turn javascript on on websites that i trust or the site has to give a good reason to do so. i wont turn on javascript to display your crappy jquery menu or slideshow.

So many pages are totally broken without javascript. You dont need javascript to have a good layout, a complexe menu or display images. Yet some "professional" sites dont even work without javascript on, All you see is a blank page.

And by the way, there is a tag called noscript , but it seems webdesigners that only think about demonstrating their "html5" talents dont know their basics.

Javascript is the new flash. Stupid cheesy animations , heavy pages , memory leaks that kill your browser, javascript intros that you cant skip ,broken parallax scrolling , slow scrollbars so it feels like you are on ipad , it will be worse than flash when designers start abusing Adobe Edge on all their websites.

So long firefox...

Allow me to list a few reasons I run with JS disabled by default:

- Poorly written JavaScript that causes my system to stall for a time, to the point where I have to kill all my browser's processes manually; more common than you'd think.

- Websites that attempt to mine cryptocurrencies using my browser with JavaScript; without my knowledge or permission.

- Then there's XSS and CSRF vulnerabilities that can leverage JavaScript to hijack active sessions.

And I am probably forgetting a few more reasons..

I do enable JavaScript for specific trusted websites, and I make temporary exceptions every now and then if necessary. But, I usually try to keep the list of exceptions short.

In regards to needing JavaScript for styling / design purposes.. Are you sure you need it? It might take you a bit longer to tweak and restructure the HTML and CSS to accomplish your design without JS, but it's well worth it.

Like what? I run with JavaScript off whenever I can. Most of the time when I enable it to access a site, it's obvious the site could be made to work (for the visitor) without JavaScript.

Heh :)

I don't browse with JS off, I only turn it off for sites that are a pain in the ass when it's on.

I use NoScript and I find very few sites that are really broken if I don't enable JS.
