This is great!

There was (is?) a program developed by some debian developers that did a similar thing way back, but I can't remember it.

Anyone?

This is a brilliant idea which I hadn't thought of before. If the Debian folks are happy with this approach, this could save us a lot of trouble!

Do you have any examples of Debian doing this?

Just to be clear, Debian didn't do this, I did.

And only, so far in one package, which can be used to mirror Debian or various of its derivatives.

Thank you. So debs for debian? I have great collaborators working with me now that could do this. We have one for Arch I believe. I just haven't prioritized this yet.

Surely there should be a Bash script or Debian package for this kinda thing?

Thank you. A Debian specific one would be great nonetheless. I will post here if I find anything.

Ooo, nice. Has there been any interest from any distros for including it in (for instance) Debian?

there's a Debian package :) thanks for the tip :)

Debian-based distros can use package pinning to this effect, but since it is an opt-in feature for advanced users, it is not a full solution. I'm mentioning it here just for sake of completeness.

Didn't Debian do that already, with Iceweasel?

Debian has apt pinning for this kind of thing.

This is roughly what Debian "alternatives" does, although it's not used for libraries.

They're already done by the Debian people.

They're already available in the Debian repos and probably elsewhere as well.

That's exactly what we're trying to do. We've already contacted Debian/Ubuntu packagers about this.

Oh, those are in Debian, as a matter of fact!

Deb? Afaik also RPM distros have such tools.

I can’t find it right now, but the Debian docs explicitly indicate that you shouldn’t do that because the internal format is not stable. It has changed significantly in the past, and the only “supported” way to do it is with the official Debian tools

Yes that would be great. I've used debian for over a decade but I still don't know how I would turn my python packages or other programs into debs.
