We're really excited about this. If you can really raise tens of thousands of dollars like this, it could really change how non-profits operate. The payments are public and broadcast on Twitter, which is also really cool.
This is awesome. So happy to see it. It does make me jealous, though, as my non-profit www.themade.org could run for 3 years on a decimal percentage of that donation. Wish it was being spread around more.
Agreed it's amazing - are they getting anything in return? I'm not asking this in a skeptical way, I just mean do the non-profits run tee-springs or are they just donating money?
I'm doing this because I wanted to do something so crazy that it would help raise awareness for this organization. In two hours here's what's happened:
1) We've raised $3,000 (6% of the goal), 2) 10 schools from California to Brazil want to run our program, 3) offers for in-kind help (programming, pr, news, etc), and 4) It's fun! It's spreading the word in an innovative way and I'm loving what we're doing!!
I'm running a little test to see just how much it takes to get someone to retweet something if its for a good cause - eg. A really awesome non for profit.

I do not work for a non for profit, nor am I trying to pander HN for donations. In fact this money is coming out of my pocket, and this test is related to the startup I am working with right now.
