It's also not like they're not campaigning for the other 3 years of the term.

Nothing stops them from doing that.

On the other hand, candidates don't have to use the same strategy or excuse to gather support.

But there was an election around the corner, they can't be bothered with any of that.

Which means they don't have a huge incumbency.

Another important reason is so that they can't be pressured into campaigning. (Since it would be illegal for the to do so.)

They don't care it sounds good on the campaign trail and most people voting don't put two and two together to figure out why they went from 40hrs/week to 29.

This year's candidates was pretty combative, I don't think they have a problem to solve more with that.

It's an election year and we don't need HN to be part of the PR imho.

They would not complain about it if Clinton was elected.

I'd argue they are not. For a start, there'll be no campaign contributions to deal about later, and no seeking of campaign funding.

it's not a campaign then.

I mean, the Dems don't make them pay a price in public opinion or at the ballot box.

Luckily for their leaders, they don't need to worry about elections.

To be fair i don't think the incumbent needs to be worried about that.

It's not to worry about the next person. The current administration is the current concern

Rex doesn't have to try to get re-elected.

The two situations really aren't that similar at all. You don't have to make everything into an opportunity to bring up the 2016 election all over again.

There haven't been criminal convictions of federal democratic politicians in the last 5 years to report on.

Also, it's moving the goal posts.

The fact that they're using smart campaign tactics doesn't imply that they're a competitor firing back rather than a concerned person taking advantage of the opportunity to draw attention to the things that concern them.

There is not going to be any war. Elections season, patriotic drive.
