Misdemeanor rather than felony would be a good direction.

That would be a misdemeanor, not a felony.

That. Or we can put the line between misdemeanor and a felony.

There is already a law. It's called misprison of felony.

The key word there is "misdemeanors," if the crime is more serious it would be prosecuted

A misdemeanor is a criminal offense, even if it does not involve jail time.

So in your opinion, where should the line be between misdemeanor and felony?

Also, do you think that charging more people with felonies is an appropriate solution to crime that has it's roots in addiction and poverty?

Misdemeanor is still a criminal record.

Misdemeanors are still very much crimes.

I think felony is the more serious one? Misdemeanor being stuff like parking violation? I'd definitely want to see some examples for felonies, too :-)

Technically a misdemeanor (well, two), not a felony.

If it gets escalated, then it’s no longer a misdemeanor, and worth considering :-)

I would argue that, regardless of punishment, reclassifying serious crimes as misdemeanors sets a tone that encourages further law breaking.

It's the "broken window" theory. Ignore minor crimes and you just create an environment that encourages more serious crimes.

I think it's a misdemeanor here.

Aren’t the charges misdemeanors?

Wrong. Misdemeanors are crimes

Making it not a felony to talk about it might help.

I think we could start by requiring mens rea for any felony offense.

He said criminal, not felon. A misdemeanor is a class of crimes.

Well, it should definitely not be a felony under a reasonable $$ amount.
