I'd like to know if someone has pointers to a similar writeup but focussed on Europe rather than US. AFAIK neither Google Checkout nor Amazon Payments are available in Europe, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

There's GoCardless (https://gocardless.com), currently UK only, but their FAQ says they're planning a European rollout by mid-2012.

The feature will likely be tied to an European Apple ID which means you’ll need an European credit card in order to make this work.
