Adzerk (http://adzerk.com) - Durham, NC (also Raleigh or Chapel Hill)
Ready to put all those ideas about scalability into practice in a situation where you really need it? We're helping Stack Overflow and other sites that you've probably heard of serve billions of ads per month. At that scale, things get very interesting.
As an engineer at Adzerk, you'll have the opportunity to work on all parts of our system, from the front-end web UI to the engines that serve the ads. Our system uses Node.js, C# (Mono), ASP.NET MVC, jQuery, MongoDB, Hadoop, and RabbitMQ.
We're also looking for someone to fill a more devops-oriented role. We use Chef to administer our systems on AWS, build and deploy using Travis-CI, and monitor using DataDog (a pretty cool startup based around statsd).
Performance and scalability are our two primary concerns, and with the traffic and growth rates that we're experiencing, lots of the lessons that you've learned start to break down. Because of that, it's not as important what you know right now – what matters is how quickly you can learn and adapt.
* Your work will have an immediate and profound impact on our product and business.
* We ship code dozens of times a week, and you will write code and push to production on your first day.
* You will be responsible for making important decisions about what tools and libraries we use.
* You will have a direct role in building the team, helping us choose additional team members as we grow in size.
* We prize open source contribution. You should have a GitHub account already.
* Everyone gets equity. We want a team of partners.
* Unlimited vacation. We work hard, but at a sustainable pace.
* Flexible work schedule, including working at home part-time if you want.
If you think you might be a great fit, drop us a line at jobs@adzerk.com.
Adzerk is focused on helping publishers make more money from their ad inventory by building a revolutionary ad serving platform. We believe that making advertising a viable business model for publishers ensures the future of a free and healthy internet. We love nothing more than helping a great publisher be rewarded for their hard work and help them continue to create awesome content.
Disqus' mission is to make it easy for people to get into discussions about the things they love -- or are just curious about. We're building out the advertising side of our business, and we're actively hiring the following roles, many of which will focus on our growing ads space, for our downtown San Francisco office:
DevOps Engineer: http://grnh.se/blk8cr
Disqus is found on millions of sites and receives over a billion pageviews a month. Our 3-person DevOps team builds the foundation for everything we do, and we're looking for a 4th person to join. You have 5+ years of experience with Linux and server hardware, and can also work with our development engineers because you know Python and Javascript (or are interested in learning).
Sr. Infrastructure Engineer, Advertising: http://grnh.se/1m56i3
Infrastructure Engineer, Advertising: http://grnh.se/ug402s
We're looking for two people to build the backend infrastructure for our growing suite of ads products. You have 2-5 years of prior experience building infrastructure (or 5-10, for our senior role) -- bonus if any of that prior experience was with advertising infrastructure.
UI Engineer, Advertising: http://grnh.se/eivf80
This role will focus on implementing designs for our Advertising product development team. You have a solid grasp of HTML and CSS, a good eye for design, and a desire to learn and grow within a comprehensive code review culture.
Data Analyst, Advertising: http://grnh.se/jkenh5
We're looking for someone with 2-5 years of prior experience to join our 2-person Data Analytics team. This role is great for someone who likes talking with data, since you won't just pull reports on behalf of other teams -- you'll evangelize the stories behind your data at all levels of the company.
Unizin will be hosting a deployment of Open edX on behalf of its members. We are looking to hire a DevOps professional to be responsible for developing and maintaining Unizin's instance of Open edX; collaborating on Open edX platform improvements; providing developer support (full stack) for Unizin Members to enhance the open source edX platform; tier 3 application support, release management, and systems administration in a 24x7 environment; advancing best practices; and using modern infrastructure tools and platforms to automate AWS cloud environments.
Please use the application linked above and mention "Hacker News" in the submission form.
We’re on the lookout for a great engineer. While we want this person to have a strong DevOps bent, it would be wrong to call them a DevOps engineer. Instead, we are looking for people who can contribute to our system from the testing setup to the deployment pipeline to our big data system and even the main product. While we do our coding in Python and use Docker, AWS, Jenkins, and other tooling we don’t think the tools themselves are the most important part. Instead, we are looking for people who aren’t afraid to experiment with new technologies, build ambitious systems, and invent new ways of doing things.
BAMx is a platform to connect publishers and merchants through a real time marketplace, to benefit from the content and not the ads. We are a funded, early stage startup in Manhattan. We have strong customer traction and are looking to build our engineering team.
If you joined our team, you would immediately be jumping in and contributing vital pieces to our system. Amongst other things, we have a fully automated test and deployment pipeline, big data gathering and analytics, comprehensive system monitoring, a real time auction system, and tight integration with numerous customer’s systems. All of these have great opportunities for improvement and for someone to take ownership and make their mark in this industry.
Further, you would be working in a great engineering environment. We are committed to doing things the right way, testing our code, refactoring it, and taking the time to do things right the first time. We use the best tools with new MacBook Pros, we have status lights to show the status of our build pipeline, and monitors displaying the current status of our system. We even have a computerized voice that announces every pull request and a red button that you’ll have to push to see what it does. If this stuff sounds cool to you and you can work onsite in NYC- you are probably the person we are looking for.

One of the most important roles in the build-out and maintenance of this system to fill is the dev-ops / automation engineer role. We need someone to help us assemble the airplane as it is taking off, so we need a strongly independent candidate that understands teamwork and compromise. You'll have a lot of autonomy in this role, and will be making big choices on a rapidly scaling application. Don't read this as you will not be supported, quite the opposite. Read this as we value your opinion and work and expect you to be deeply integrated within our team. We need to be able to depend on you, and you need to be able to depend on us.
What we are looking for:
- Our concurrent code is built in Java and handles thousands of requests a second, 24/7. We need help keeping it happy and behaving well from deployment, to scaling to everyday operations.
- We run on a variety of Amazon Web Services like DynamoDB, EC2 and SQS - we need to get the most out of it. Prior experience here is a huge plus.
- Our code handles thousands of dollars worth of transactions a day, and is up 24/7 so we need to monitor everything. We like Scout, Nagios and Graphite. If you have strong feelings about why these are the wrong tools, we would love to hear that too.
GinzaMetrics is actively seeking to fill the position of DevOps engineer in our growing team for either our Raleigh, NC or San Francisco, CA office.
This position includes both new development and operational problem resolution, along with supporting functions like release automation, test automation, debugging tool development, and much more. You aren't expected to have an understanding of all these areas, however you should have a solid grasp of and desire to work in multiple areas of our technology stack.
You should:
- Have a passion for technology
- Enjoy working in an agile, fast-moving, ever-changing environment
- Welcome and take on technical challenges of all shapes and sizes
- Have a broad understanding of development, operations, hardware, SDLC, QA, bug tracking, server operations, etc.
- Be open to working with and learning new technologies seeing problems through to resolution
- Be willing to travel to San Francisco, CA as needed, likely no more than 3-4 trips total annually
- Have excellent interpersonal skills and desire to work with a fast paced and dedicated team
You must demonstrate solid working knowledge of:
- Any mainstream object oriented or scripting programming language, ideally Ruby/Rake, Python, C, C# or Powershell
- The SQL language and/or SQL-based relational database system(s) (i.e. MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, etc.)
- NoSQL based database system(s) (i.e. MongoDB, CouchDB, Redis, Cassandra...etc.)
- Competitive salary for whichever area (NC or CA) you are in
- Full benefits and equity options
- Working with cool people on a cool product
To apply, please email us (jobs@ginzametrics.com) your resume and a cover letter. If selected, we will conduct a brief telephone interview, followed by technical interviews. We regret that we are not able to respond to everyone.

Asking for a friend: their company needs an architect an engineer in one who is capable of understanding an overly-complex system that is literally a clusterf*ck of how not to use the cloud including components like ElasticSearch and other assorted garbage and turning it into something modern, performance and cost effective using things like Clickhouse.
It needs to be someone with a passion for performance, building things right, and cost reduction. A passion for taking a huge, overly complex cloud based system and turning it into something great, maintainable and performant, and as a by product, both cheaper to run and maintain.
Open to discuss your stack of choice but would prefer stuff like Rust, Scala and the like.

Work in a small team on a mix of technologies including Software Defined Networking (SDN), Big Data, network overlays, routing/switching, DevOps tools, open source software, distributed systems, and more at scale. Raleigh-Durham, NC preferred but other locations (New York, Boston area, San Jose, Seattle, REMOTE) available to well qualified candidates.
