I am still expecting them to make it possible to have a folder synced(backed up only) without requiring a RW key to be created.

Because file sync is not a backup.

No, and I don't think they ever will - they took long enough to implement Selective Sync. They'd rather have a product that can be seen as 'simple', than one that could have users ask "why can't this person see my files?".

Honestly, I just wish syncing was easier to setup than having to copy keys to my phone and other devices.

Syncing feature is still missing while a lot of things are being introduced, which is hard to tolerate.

It is funny, because to me "only a file you have to sync (and backup)" sounds more like an advantage than setting up an entire server environment just so you can access your passwords.

Yeah, except for the whole Dropbox making passwords optional thing. I asked AgileBits about this and they have stated that only syncing via Dropbox is supported at this time.

I very much want to find an alternate sync solution. I think it is kind of pointless to have a secure password solution if the underlying sync is insecure or more accurately has a dismal approach to security.

Thanks for the reply. It's aggravating that this remains unaddressed. I don't even care about "syncing." All we need is to be able to export them to a file and then import them to another installation.

It may not be popular to say this about free software, but WTF? That is simply stupid.

Without syncing or shared folders, I haven't tried it.

BT Sync is missing one thing : the ability to choose which files to sync from a remote secret.

Yes, me too. It took some missteps with shitty Lastpass before I finally found it. I sync directly from my computer to my phone and from my computer to my NAS. I've thought about syncing to Google Drive or some other service like that and it is an option, but so far hasn't been necessary. I don't see why my password data should ever have to leave my machines if I don't want it to. And it doesn't.

For me, this was the most-used feature. "a folder that syncs" was a nice side effect.

(I know - I'm clearly not "their most valuable customer segment" - if I was them I'd probably be breaking my irrelevant-to-them shit too...)

I don't think I like the part where it mocks up your UI to look like your files have synced, but they're not actually sitting on your drive.

I've been burned enough times by "Delayed Write", where you stick a bunch of files on a USB drive, pull it out and hop in the car, while back on your machine it pops up a little box saying "Whoa! hold up! we didn't actually copy any of those files yet, even though we said we had." This seems like another version of that same idea, except this time designed to leave me without any of the music and video I'd "synced" onto my new road machine right before hopping that month-long riverboat down the Congo.

Given a choice, I think I'd prefer that my machine actually did the things with my files that I've told it to do. Copy them when I copy them, sync them when I sync them. I hope there's an option to do that here.

I appreciate the comment.

In my mind, the sync feature for this app is less about backup and more about maintaining a single instance across multiple computers/browsers.

It very much stores the passwords locally, even if you enable syncing. It wouldn't make sense for it not to.

It's stored locally, and does not currently sync. I'm actively trying to figure out sync for multiple devices, but at best that'll be months away (if I do it, I want to do it right. I have nightmares about losing people's data).

Sync is not backup.

So now I need to give them my email address plus remember yet another password for sync? Do not want. I always thought the old model with the sync keys was pretty sweet. Is the synced data end-to-end encrypted? It better be!

In reading about Sync, I was surprised to see their claim that they never hold the encryption keys, even when signing in from mobile devices. This is in contrast to SpiderOak, which says that if one signs in from a mobile device or on the website, they hold keys in RAM for the session.

I don't agree because they removed a feature that, frankly, would just cause a user to lose all their passwords if they lost their device. There's still two other sync methods that don't use their service, and one of which is direct to another device without going through a third party.
