I actually considered building a web ring service just for tumblr when it was beginning to get popular. What's old is new again tends to repeat over and over again.
Tumblr was very close to the perfect social media network. It's a shame it succumbed to corporate greed after the Yahoo acquisition. I really hope someone manages to recreate it as a decentralized protocol
I love that Matt and co decided to get tumblr and keep it going.
Of course I wish it would go back to the (almost completely) uncensored version that is once was, although it's still not as prude as it could easily be pushed to be.
I still have not found a quick way to make a tumblr clone using wordpress (dot org version) - one would think with wordpressMU / multi-site it would take very little to clone the theme of tumblr for WP, and make a one click backend that mirrors tumblr's front-upload and admin.
Perfect thing for a buddpyress perhaps.
At least it was easy to export tumblr and import into WP.
I hope they improve the platform. Tumblr is such a nice place with a cool atmosphere, but I hardly can justify using it (working in a tech news outlet) when there are so many rival platforms with way more people to talk to.
Tumblr clearly has a good "soul" - if you will. We'll see if it lasts, but the website is definitely a certain kind of special. Glad to have been part of it for the last decade+
I share your reservations, but has Tumblr really been going anywhere the last couple of years? It's a little like Flickr in how it's calcified in development, but is still a solid product, nevertheless, albeit one that feels a bit stale.
I totally agree that Tumblr is underrated. It's by no means perfect for SEO, but I haven't found it a problem. Would certainly be nice to have a little more control over certain bits, but it hasn't been detrimental to mine, now PageRank 7 (if that still means anything?)
