If they don't want to use the internet, they don't have to, right? The benefits and cost of internet use are concentrated on the individual, so I'm not sure that we should expend a lot of effort to force them to "join" the internet if they don't want it.
Why not? It's not a problem. Before internet era people spent much time on useless things like reading books (mostly fiction), watching TV, playing video games etc.
Internet is just a communication tool people use to exchange information.
one reason i dont like using the internet is because i have to read this same "oh nooo the internet is distracting" shit over and over, even on a site about programming
If I wasn't dependent on using the internet for income I would just try to find other ways of using my free time than the internet at this point if the worst case outcome in the article came to pass.
Maybe this title should be more like... "How having internet access changes the way people choose to spend their time". It's not like The Internet is attacking people, we choose to do this.
The internet isn't fun and weird because you don't actively seek it out. You're content with what you're given and what everyone else uses and put no effort into getting what you want because you can't bring yourself to care enough for it.
If anything, most internet has use has to be at least somewhat more stimulating and engaging than passively sitting on the couch for hours staring at a screen.
