Maybe it was a ploy to get a bunch of traffic to their server and temporarily DDoS it?

I think they are being hit with a big DDoS attack. Maybe this was their only hope of stopping it?

It could be a diversion for another attack. If there is currently a ddos going on, other suspicious behavior is more likely to be overlooked.

I'm guessing it was a DDOS due to the amount of time the site was down - if it was coming from a single IP or single IP range they would likely have been able to block it off a lot faster.

I guess they gave themselves a DDoS...

It was a DDoS.

"This is very weird for a DDoS, to be honest."

Maybe it was aimed at bandwidth costs?

Pretty sure it's jackasses with nothing better to do. Either for revenge or the lolz. Probably an impulsive decision since the attacker gave up so fast.

There's not much you can achieve for your own gains with a DDoS. I've heard of rare cases of extortion or underhanded business practices to hurt competitors.

Is this a subtle way of DDoS'ing a site they don't like?

It was DDOSed. Someone actually attacked it.

perhaps they were DDOSing it and brought it to a crawl, then all the other visitors streaming in would certainly give it the final blow

I assume Sony was just trying to hit this site with the Slashdot effect by taking this action as an indirect DDOS.

It's probably a DDoS attack.

Maybe the DDOS is just a distraction.

I was 'in the room' when this happened. From the people monitoring the site and getting it back online there was no suspicion that the amount of traffic was high enough to be considered a DDOS, it was just a small, low-traffic service that got unexpectedly crushed a là many that get suffocated by HN.

I suspect other reasons for bringing this up now.

Or the server was a target of DDOS and Hetzner had to shut it down for operational reasons.

Or the botnet was DDoSing, and someone decided they had enough. (it would not be the first time)

Doesn't look like DDoS, maybe they deployed some dodgy code?

its not clear its ddos, though it might be, as one commenter suggested it might be ad revenue or so. maybe they hit themselves? :D. i bet we will never know.

I did something like that once and the next day my hosting provider warned me I was under a DDOS attack. Might have been a coincidence though.
