I'm guessing it was a DDOS due to the amount of time the site was down - if it was coming from a single IP or single IP range they would likely have been able to block it off a lot faster.
Pretty sure it's jackasses with nothing better to do. Either for revenge or the lolz. Probably an impulsive decision since the attacker gave up so fast.
There's not much you can achieve for your own gains with a DDoS. I've heard of rare cases of extortion or underhanded business practices to hurt competitors.
I was 'in the room' when this happened. From the people monitoring the site and getting it back online there was no suspicion that the amount of traffic was high enough to be considered a DDOS, it was just a small, low-traffic service that got unexpectedly crushed a là many that get suffocated by HN.
its not clear its ddos, though it might be, as one commenter suggested it might be ad revenue or so. maybe they hit themselves? :D. i bet we will never know.
