Oh please. You got contacted by a recruiter and NOT given a job.

A recruiter contacted me for a position at the company that I co-founded. Unfortunately I didn’t have the time to play along, so the only outcome was a message to the hiring manager.

Funny Story:

A recruiter sent me a detail post about a job. I wrote back and said I was interested. He never responded so I applied to the job online and got it.

4 months later he messages me and says sorry but it looks like the position has been removed.

I didn't write back.


Funny: the recruiter was annoyed at his declination email - a phone call was apparently expected. But how does a company decline? "We do not see a fit at this time, but we'll keep your resume on file". Lol

Man up and phone them. From the sounds of it, however, it appears that you didn't get the job.

I know someone who was contacted for a job he had recently quit.

I've also had multiple recruiters contact me for the same job after telling them I wasn't interested.


Thanks for the reply, I did reach out and did not hear back. This is the first time this has happened to me in my 18 year career, so I don't think it's me. I've spoken to other ppl searching for a job now and have heard of similar stories which is just sad.

It's my job to find a job, you're right. It's the recruiters job to represent the company. Canceling a meeting with no notice and not replying to emails asking about it is not just unprofessional but negatively impacts brand perception.


I've had similar experiences. I had a recruiter set up a technical phone interview with the developer who never called. No brief email saying something like, "Hi, our developers thought your qualifications weren't a good fit for the position. Good luck on your job search." After emailing the recruiter she said she would talk to the developer and "look into it." I never received any further responses.

My favorite is when you apply somewhere and receive no response. Then several months later, you're contacted by a recruiter from the company at which point you've long past moved on with an offer from somewhere else.


You had phone interviews with us, didn't get an interview, and never found out why? That sucks. You should send me mail (I'd write you but don't know your email address).

This is exactly the kind of thing I want to make sure we never do in our recruiting process.


sorry that happened to you. most likely they had a candidate deep in the pipeline with an offer out, and they were hedging their bets in case they declined. this is surprisingly common, though its shitty behavior for the recruiter to ghost you

I had several screen calls with HR recruiters recently where they asked me why I wanted to work at their company, and I said something like, "Well, you reached out to me, so what do you think?" I did not get any of those jobs.

Extra option: I never applied and was hired. Believe it or not we have recruiters out there sourcing candidates. I have personally interviewed people who were asked to apply by recruiters but who did not apply on their own.

Are you saying you've experienced this or know people who have?

Personally I have not experienced this or know anyone who has (I'm in EU if it matters).

In response to the original post: In each case you refer to a recruiter. Is this an external recruiter (and always the same one) or an HR person at the company you wish to work for? If it is (an external recruiter) then I can imagine it being something that has little to do with you (Maybe the recruiter is requesting advance payment or unreasonable amounts, demanding all further communication go through them to ensure they get paid/have evidence of having "recruited" you, have terms that say they get paid if an interview takes place or whatever).

If that is not the case it seems odd to me that you wouldn't simply get some kind of message along the lines of:

"We are sorry for your inconvenience but we have already filled the position in question. The interview will no longer be necessary."

I was once told by a recruiter that she absolutely guaran-damn-teed that she would call me after the interview process and let me know the employer's decision. Guaran-damn-teed.

After my in-person interview, about a month passed with no contact from her. I figured I didn't get the job. But I wanted to call her anyway, just because. She said, "Oh, I thought I sent you an email about it. Yeah, they don't want you."


Understood. I'm an engineer at the company, not a recruiter, but I'll pass the word along. Either way, thanks for the feedback and sorry for the inconvenience. A "no" response is better than no response.

I've had a recruiter writing me to thank me for my application, but unfortunately blah blah résumé blah blah position blah blah. The thing is I had never applied to anything at her company nor sent her a résumé, I had just asked her a question once. Which she had never answered...

My 2 cents: I was contacted by a recruiter, unsolicited through a referral, and asked if I was interested in interviewing. At the time, I already had an offer from one of the other big companies, which I was upfront about. The recruiter said it was ok, and would set me up for the first round of interviews. After about a week of emails, I just simply stopped hearing from the recruiter. Not a single interview, no reason for terminating contact, just plain dead silence. I tried emailing her a few times and left her a voicemail, noting very politely that they had contacted me and not vice versa, and asking if they were still interested in setting up an interview, but all I got was stony silence. If that's not broken, I don't know what is. For a company that hires the best engineering talent, they either hire substandard HR people, or perhaps most HR people just operate at a different level of efficacy.

I was recently talking to a 3rd party recruiter who started asking me for detailed salary info of all my past jobs. I told him that I didn’t feel comfortable answering that, then when he pushed back I told him I’m legally not required to give him that info in my state (and the potential employer’s state.) He abruptly cut the call off and ghosted me.

I decided to apply to the company directly. They were happy to talk to me because my experience was a really good fit for them. I come to find out that the recruiter emailed them saying that I was a poor candidate and that he suggest they don’t talk to me. Luckily they didn’t listen to him.

I am also done with 3rd party recruiters.


A Google recruiter cold-called me -- well, cold-LinkedIn me -- based on my Stack Overflow responses. I did a phone interview even though I wasn't really interested in leaving my current job.

That, plus my location requirements, plus a so-so interview, plus the fact that I wasn't particularly qualified for the job, surely led to the following "Thanks, but no thanks" followup call.


Here's a relevant experience. I applied for a job a few days ago. The recruiter reached out to me through email to schedule a phone call and I scheduled a time through her online calendar. To give you some more context in terms of timing: she emailed me in the morning and I responded in the afternoon. Less than 24 hours after she reached out to me, the job ad on the company page is taken down and now says the position is filled. No response from the recruiter.

What the hell was that?
