SkyDock[0] is another alternative. It uses SkyDNS. It is a little more setup, but it has a few additional features. crosbymichael is a sharp guy.

Cloudflare Pages, begin.com, fly.io, and surge.sh are a few I've come across as alternatives (depending on what features you're after).

RetroShare is probably the only one more or less "finished" right now. There is also a similar one from FSF called GnuNet, and a very Twitter-like alternative called Twister, but they are both pretty alpha. If you also want a Skype alternative there's Jitsi, and a new one called Tox, but I haven't looked much into it. I think it's also pretty alpha.

For mobile you can take your pick from these:

There are plenty of cool alternatives but one I’ve used and don’t see mentioned here is Dokku, which was trivial for me to set up on, in my case, a cheap droplet on DigitalOcean.

hund.io is the best alternative in my opinion. It integrates with pingdom too, and has some other cool features.

One alternative, which I haven't tried either is Planet Labs [1]. They use dozens of tiny satellites instead of a few big ones, and their quality is not yet up to DigitalGlobe, but they are a startup and hopefully are much more open to different use cases.

ZeroTier and Nebula are the only modern alternatives I personally know about.

Disclosure: I wrote and founded ZeroTier. Listed Nebula too for neutrality and completeness.

Best of luck, kenton!

If anyone is looking for alternatives: http://alternativeto.net/software/sandstorm-io/ . I think Cozy, Yunohost, Cloudron, arkOS are the closest alternatives (Bitnami is about 1-click images and DO/linode are about cloud servers). Would be great to hear about other alternatives...

AFAICT the best alternative, interface-wise, is Roundcube, and it doesn't seem particularly exciting (it's also written in PHP... which doesn't necessarily have to count against it, but makes me a little wary).

I've foolishly started to build my own, which at some point may become good enough to open source (I certainly don't want to commercialize it).

Are there alternatives you would recommend that can be easily implemented on a front-end level instead of the back-end/network level? I don't disagree with their recommendations- just curious.

Try Kitemaker, it’s a YComb backed JIRA alternative.

WinSCP is a nice alternative.

I believe OpenSolar.com is another alternative

I was going to suggest trying Kite, but it seems to be unavailable at the moment. I've never used it myself but it's the only other one I know of.

bat is another great alternative

rclone might hold some promise as an alternative, if you don't mind using Go.

There is no _the_ alternative.

But there are alternatives. I would reach for Go. I’m not great at it but good enough that I know I can code up a server. And I know it will be be stable and simple to deploy - upload the binary and run it via systemd.

Looking for an alternative to things like Landscape, NewRelic - ideally something self-hosted, free, pretty. Something more user-friendly, less intimidating than Nagios.

Ideally, but not necessarily, multi platform client support.

One alternative is Relay. For folks interested, check it out here: https://relayfi.com/
