Then subsidize food for the poor.

If we had the political will to make sure poor people could eat, we could just redirect some of the subsidy money.

Give poor people money to buy food, they will likely optimize in fat+ ways. Pay people to be healthy. The needy can be healthy. Put a floor under everyone and then progressively incentivize health.

If we are going to subsidize certain groups, let’s make it explicit and subsidize the poor instead.

That would penalize the poor.

We should have policies to make the poor less poor.

That would be another way of lowering the percentage of people living in poverty.

How about ending poverty instead so that poor people don't have to eat at the dollar store because that's all they can afoord.

The government already does that in terms of food stamps.

A job in the richest country in the world should not pay starvation wages.

Or, you know, reduce welfare and help people get off welfare.

Subsidize mobiles, laptops and tablets.

Oh and maybe food and shelter.

Take more money from poor people and then give it back at the end of the year - after paying the salary of all the new bureaucrats you had to hire. Great idea.

You're proposing cutting government support for the poor so that they'll try harder to escape poverty? Since I'm pretty sure there's already plenty of incentives to not living in poverty

In this case, I would say that would be good. It would be subsidizing our poorest folks, at the cost of those who can afford it.

Or just stop subsidizing them. In the short term, it's more suffering for the poor, but in the long run, it's fewer people born into multi-generational poverty traps and into communities where they learn to become dependent and game government programs, because the dominant source of income is unconditional social assistance programs provided at the taxpayer's expense.

If that is such a problem for poor, and we want to base our policies on what affects poor, maybe just give them more money?

The government should increase the taxes and spend that money on the poor/people in need.

Remove UK government support for food for the poor. This includes school lunches and whatnot. Will the charities be able to fill the need? The answer is no. Charities can fill gaps but not beyond that.

Help the poor. Really. When each penny counts, the incentive can only go that far. It's not exactly what capitalism good at.

Good point.

Give poor people more nutrients and better health... and they'll produce more poor people, who then will run out of nutrients and health care.
