To this day I can't figure out how ICQ ever became popular, but yes I can vouch that there are still people who use it and probably always will.

Apparently my memory is faulty, but I could have sworn I tried to find ICQ 10ish years ago and found it no longer existed. I guess what I likely found was that no one I knew used it anymore. I wonder whether they still have a significant group of dedicated users.

it's incredible to me that ICQ still going. Obviously it died down in worldwide/western popularity early 2000s but I do know it continued to be used in Russia and some other places. Kinda amazing and I'll always respect the original development coming out of Israel. Fond memories of those late 90s days when it was the standard.

With the random chance of any app with the right timing/reach and features to gain some traction (see whatsapp) etc, guess they figure why not put ourselves out there again hehe

I've literally only met "one" person who still uses ICQ and I have no idea who he talks to on it. He's much older than I am, someone I look up to, but he's also a bit weird.

ICQ is still around, it gained some fairly modern features and is supposedly fairly popular in Russia.

ICQ was insanely popular in the US as well. I remember getting on it and chatting with my friends when i was a teenager in the late 90s.

A couple of years ago everybody had ICQ, at least here in Germany. I wouldn't say that it "didn't take off".

ICQ also was very popular in Europe. I still remember my ICQ uin, even after not using it anymore since the rise of facebook and whatsapp.
