Still, even if this is selfish and hypocritical, it can be harnessed - transportation is all about "if you build it they will come". If people support the development of alternative transport, it will get used. The biggest obstacle is people demanding that all the transport funding goes to building roads and parking lots, if we can defeat that mentality by telling people it will make the roads better for them, thats good.
It is the onion, and is flippant, but as a general belief it touches upon a basic truth -- everyone would love if everyone else used public transit, leaving the roads available for our use.
Yes, polling indicates the majority would like to live in a 15 minute city, however that poll does not mention restricting vehicles. And of course I agree with it personally, minus the roadblocks.
People are not opposed to the concept, they are opposed to the vehicle restrictions, and the latter is what's riling up conspiracy theorists.
just about every locale in the world has come to the conclusion that there needs to be a limited set of permits.
Any city that is allowing Uber or Lyft hasn't come to that conclusion, or is changing their mind. And so far, I don't see barely running cars, i see nicer cars, free water, price predictability.
There are efforts being made, it will just take time. Can’t move almost a century of car centric public policy on a dime. Vote with your dollars and feet.
> US has 1 traffic fatality per 85 million miles driven. Uber's self-driving cars have driven ~3 million miles & killed one person
> While loss of human life is always a tragedy, individual fatalities are absolutely worth it if we can begin to reduce that count sooner than by proceeding with excessive caution.
Wait, when did I agree to be a utilitarian with you? Did I vote utilitarianism into power?
You may be right, but I don't think this is all as obscure as some people would like to think. That's an article that seems to recognize that many of its readers will be familiar with what I'm talking about.
