I would put it this way. The biggest problem for Perl is readability. Ofc people can write a readable code when they want but most of the people do not. Hence the perl is never the best tool.
I partly agree with what you have said. Persistence is important, there will be always some boring stuff to learn and repetitive tasks to do. We all have to deal with it.
What would be your advice to a person that skipped college due to financial crisis (had to support family). However i found a job in IT and still am employed and this is my 4th company. I am now kind of financially secured. I feel like going to college would just kill time i have already turned into $ and knowledge. Yet I'd like to get exposed to some areas and stuff taught there.
China (including special areas Macau, Hong Kong) should learn to respect an intellectual property. In countries where there is 98% piracy it's impossible to start a purely software company.
So why are they learning to code ? To be a peasant for banks, insurance companies, gov or cheap workforce for the west ( but yes this is hong kong and i know they are quire "rich").
I am from a post-soviet/socialist country and took me some time to understand that paying for a software that you use everyday is worth it. But it's still too uncommon in my country and many others.
BC degree is a bullshit you can literally buy it in many countries. By buying i mean you pay for tuition and you visit the school for 2 years and then you get a degree. But not only is that very expensive for most of the people in post-soviet countries but also worthless.
They will not teach you anything useful. Not even when you apply for CS. They exploit the post-soviet system.
And there are many good people in these countries. Not exceptional, not 1% of mathematicians, physicists or ninja programmers but better than the average.
Yet they did not get a chance.
Have you tried to do business in China when it comes to software and services ? Not only are these Chinese software giants backed by government but you have to comply with numerous rules and let government to stick its dirty fingers to your stuff.
Oh and most of these SW companies sell physical goods as well they are not pure SW at all.
I was obviously exaggerating about it. Sites like nationmaster shows 82% and that's from 2007. And yes they do exist but selling a software to customer is very hard in china. I am talking about direct B2C model...eg you sell a photoshop like program.
Most of these companies use the software to support its additional services.
Yes i have been generalizing I admit to that crime.
It's a fact that 1% of the best of the best from a country like India that has so huge population will disrupt the local economics. That and the fact that the others not that gifted will work for less than the locals.
We live in a globalized world but that does not always work for benefits of humankind.
They are different cultures...the same as gypsies and poorer social ranks from post-soviet countries.
Will it ? I do not think so. The man has always managed to create a lot of unnecessary jobs. Take a look at almost any management positions.
I am not saying they are not important...what i am saying is that most of the jobs that require a manager would be better with no manager rather than a poor one. And believe me there's only 1% of all the managers that are actually worth it.
Run from such a company. You are just an asset to them that has to obey. You are not doing a nuclear research and there's not a reason for them to force you.
This is sad day for content creators. If the site is full of ads you are not comfortable to view do NOT VISIT such sites again. It's stealing, it's manipulating the statistics.
We can't get good content because corporations taught people to not pay for content and now we will not get good content because people will slice the income of those who use ads.
First of all I do not watch TV. I assume that's why netflix is so popular. Please pardon me i am not sure if it has an ads in it or not but i assumed since it's a content on demand it does not.
Also simply blocking something because you can but you should not is cheating.
I would say an ability to develop a UI while following a shop's preferred style guideline. I would say a mastery of CSS3+HTML is necessary, advanced JS related to DOM manipulation is also welcome.
Familiarity with CSS preprocessors would be considered big +.
Open Source did not win. In fact it destroyed a lot of potential markets. With this move Apple is dragging more and more developers that would be interested in Go/ Java (aka Android world) to its net.
And who is it to blame ? It's extremely hard to get to that level of expertize when it comes to low level and C/ASM.
And another thing is to transmute this knowledge to $$$. Yes your 1%center that gets paid 500$k in Oracle is probably considered rich and successful.
But how can you start working on low level and get at least the same amount of money than in other fields / areas in IT ?
And do not forget that it is extremely tied to either big corporations, asian HW manufacturers or other big companies (like car makers) that simply requires this type of knowledge.
There was probably a zero chance for me to dive deeper into this in my country. Yes at uni they teach you some C and algorithms but it is the top of the iceberg.
If you need to spend $$$ go for it. You can secure yourself with that kind of money. Buy a house, car, invest...whatever. You can spend now and get something that might be super expensive in the future.
On the other hand if you do not care and desire something else...back off.
Rust's not there yet and I wonder if it can compete. The thing is it is too specialized and low level (not that it is a bad thing for what it is intended for). The problem with all of the low-level things is that they are seriously undervalued.
I am glad that there is servo but we need something like an operating system (IoT might work for the start). I hope Samsung changes its plans with Tizen and eventually will develop something with Rust in mind.
I meant financially undervalued by companies. Yes you have some players here and there but overall the market is not that big.
And an investment to this area from a developer's POV is too much of a risk. Also the learning curve is too steep.
Web tech is just the simplest way to reach the end user. Mobile apps or desktop apps are becoming a hassle as well. It just takes time to "install" something and use it.
Lets put it this way. Rust is great and all for somebody who is willing to invest in it but there are simply other "mature" alternatives that are just as good.
This is getting more and more hilarous FFS. Will we have a special group for afroamerican women programmers ? Special group for mentally ill programmers ? Or what about vegan transgender programmers ? This kind of positive discrimination is really annoying and unfair. Using the right tool and right people should be free of all prejudices FFS
I call it BS. Women are mostly emotion based creatures. They are simply interested in other areas than men. They love the experience and the emotion from things..hence why they want to be translators, teachers and they study other kind of stuff we consider mostly useless.
It's like saying NBA is occupied mostly by tall people and that's troubling because short people are in disadvantage. We should try to stimulate the short people so they start playing basketball competitively.
Are you korean studying in Hong Kong or in Korea ? Well i would say it does not matter anyway. People commenting here are mostly americans or europeans so they do not know about the education system in Korea. I would say do not go for the degree. Do not waste the talent and time. Most of Asian universities will suck up your soul.
Earn the money and go to uni in states or in europe.
But at the same time it's a chicken egg problem for many people. Not having money to attend a uni is a big problem for a lot of us. I and my family simply did not have the $$$ to take the chance. And i am talking about actual living expenditures as the education is "free" here.
The formal knowledge can be obtained elsewhere anyway. A degree from a well-known university is cool but most of us are not 1% and even if you get there it does not mean you can survive. Some people really hate academic soil.
And you know zero about her/his background. She/he is korean meaning that the society puts a lot of pressure at her and mostly her life / career has already been predetermined which i have to say is fucking unimaginable for a lot of people.
She wants to change that and take a risk and explore the endless possibilities. Do you know what does it mean to finish the degree in Korea ?
