co founder of Startup weekend (non profit) / Up.co
founder of recorp.co /founder of joinmassive.com / electis.app
Moved from reading slashdot to hn a while back.. now on open source democratic tools electis.io
Such a great post, thx for writing it, you inspired me to write about how to stop the startup Bullshit... Startup Weekend has always been neutral and we should remind our community why / what it really mean.
A quick tip used by the first VC (George Doriot) was to ask people what would they do with $1b for example. This is a good way to know your natural north. If you don’t know that then I guess try to know the people you enjoy / admire. Also a last good motivation is to read Seneca on the shortness of life : https://archive.org/stream/SenecaOnTheShortnessOfLife/Seneca...
2. I’m looking for a co-founder to join a crypto based lottery that is legally not a lottery (style is gaming) MVP is done but need some polishing (C++ / cross platform / background in game could be interesting) : Franck nouyrigat
I disagree I would not shut it down I would either sell it or keep it to maintain jobs. As for the investors if a long term plan i would convert to debt and try to get them to flat especially if friends and family. But yep, there are cases when you need to shut down and zombie mode sux if you can’t escape
It’s “Très mauvais” :)
But I agree and would love to see more work done to take advantage of animations to teach math concept (e.g 2blue1brown) game is also cool especially with unity (cf on YouTube : codeadventure)
I recommend reading fools fraud and firebands on the matter by Roger Scruton as long as Taleb on the dictatorship of the minority https://link.medium.com/P6JRZtgtuZ
I’m deeply worried about the evolution of the universities it looks more and more like a cult is taking over instead of science debate and rationalism over emotions...
Meh, the pixel seems more interesting (although google is terrible for privacy) the only good news is on the better battery / also I think they killed 3D Touch no?
I wish I could afford these, but I’m really curious to test a hackintosh with threadreaper 3 following what they did on Linus tech tips with a virtualized PC and Mac running at the same time on the same monitor https://youtu.be/EozeSDeV3Vo
Good article, I wrote a paper a while ago on that subject for startup research based on my experience with startup weekend and the often asked question on where to find a cofounder... I applied these principal for myself and Found 3 great co founder and launched 3 different ventures (one is a cash cow / one is venture backed / one is a non profit)
Damn you beat me at it :) makes you think about what unsupervised AI training can lead to... imagine not having insurance because you bought some
Nutella on amazon during a full moon or any other crazy scenario
All of these really motivates me to push for decentralized projects. If the future Is basically full of gate keepers choosing what apps can be used or not and we don’t have any platform allowing freedom then it would be a very sad future indeed
The sun is way worse than 5G. Saddens me for the academic world to see such study / or see an argument based on a number of “scientists” instead of an argument of quality.
Yes, remind me of Weber s law. It is observed that the same law applies to justice sentences as a bias on how our brain works (following a logarithmic function) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hHG8io5qIU8
Meh, I used to take better photos with a disposable pocket camera where you take off the shutter to allow for long exposure. But it’s a step in the right direction. Ultimately you would indeed need to filter a lot of thermic noise to allow for longer exposure on a CCD. (I started digital Astro photo years ago with an ST6 that needed to be cool down to -60C using a Pelletier module)
I would go for a friendly resolution, just say hey some of that was done on my free time it represents that much hours of work, I’m fine transferring it in exchange for $ to cover the extra work / equity if it’s a startup. Also negotiate some power if you can like having your own team to help you with it etc... everyone wins : you and your Corp
I have no kids yet, but I always thought the goal of life is obviously to have kids wether they are dna or idea ones. We re hard programmed for that like any other species. The issue now is cost in terms of time of money. I see a couple of solutions to these, will test and document :)
And academia is failing too, I can’t remember what Nobel prize mentioned that he could not get one today as most researchers are stuck in having to produce papers for the sake of keeping their grants. What would be needed is a lot of free time and freedom to think ...
I did move to Puerto Rico, there is a small and growing tech ecosystem there and growing. A lot of tax incentive and flights to Miami and nyc are cheap. Rents are cheap and this is a good deal for remote workers
I agree with the academic attention and that the concept has existed for a long time of course.
The point here was to introduce a new model to look at it to go beyond the 4 types of entrepreneurs introduced by steve blank.
Usually social entrepreneurship is studied at the startup level not the founder level. I wanted to show that for one Bill Gates it might exist an invisible Bill or Melinda gates who helped millions but made no $.
This post is certainly not trying to be about politics, the goal is just to help advance the discussion of supporting entrepreneurs who are working on things usually done by the state (Where customers don’t pay)
The conclusion and point of this article will come in future article; it resonates a lot with yesterday s post on HN about “debt is back”
Yep, that s also how science works: it predicts the future based on a model. Quick trick to know if it s a science or not: if it has the word science in it it’s not. (Eg social science)
+1 The elections are coming soon and the current mayor is just doubling down on promesses (while Paris is great on paper the past couple of years did feel like chaos from my point of view)
Fascinating, our brain seems to have a read and write function based the the type of signal sent by the neurons. Now they question would be how does the brain “knows” when to right and when not
I love this interview it’s typical of Feynman; what do you mean by how magnet works is a fair question but it’s also a multi form one. We don’t really know we just know up to a certain level he had a lecture about how Mayans predicted astronomical events with beans, were the bean the answer to why?. I’ve learned a lot from this interview on how to look at science. Why is indeed a profound concept
It’s ad reductio it’s like saying soccer is pushing a ball. You could also say life is waking up eating sleeping and then death. It’s true but it’s definitely an emotional argument. I preferred the lectures on free will by Conway, it does not answer anything but it allows for a nice réflexion
I dropped programming after my first real job. I used to program from a young age (Basic, pascal, C, ASM) then played with GNU/Linux and BSD then on networks with Cisco and Juniper to setup some BGP route (internship) all of that was a lot of fun I loved building mini video games or my own operating system. But once I started to work and some guy who did not know programming was asking me to do some not fun code about accounting and I had to work with other programmers I realized I loved to play but not to work. I then moved to the business side as I liked learning new things and I got to tell programmers what to build without having to be bored. But consulting became boring too. It took me a while but I found happiness in entrepreneurship and started to code a little again while doing business or non profits. I think building your own thing is a lot of fun. At this point I would maybe recommend you to take a break and not code for a little while to see where your true north is. Good luck!
Oh so many memories, I spent so many hours as a kid setting up my own stunt. Would def want a new version running with a modern 3d engine (GTA V is a little like that)
Joinmassive.com / remote / full time / pre series A and growing fast / GPU / C/C++
We re looking for a C++ macOS & Windows developer for our Computing Monetization project who can work on low level / especially GPU across platforms (windows / MAC)a plus if you have experience in crypto mining
MASSIVE is a fully distributed company headquartered in the USA. MASSIVE is a well-funded startup with founders, advisors, and investors that have been successful on many other, well-known projects (ask for more info by email)
The MASSIVE SDK is an ethical alternative to current online monetization. The SDK lets developers charge their users for premium services and in-app items with a little bit of their unused computing resources, rather than money or ads. We can generate up to $0.50 per user per month.
The SDK works by analyzing available resources across Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android devices and making that supply accessible to computing needs on the demand side, including scientific calculations, cryptocurrency mining, monte carlo simulations, bandwidth sharing, and IP address in an intelligent way (almost invisible / realtime load balancing)
Job requirement
Experience with GPU programming, we re looking to optimize our code /
Experience with GPU cryptocurrency mining would be ideal but we re open to anyone who is passionate about high performance computing at a low level and who can work across platforms
Communications are online mostly, we re a dev heavy startup (no useless meetings) English is needed. Our team is in north and South America as long as Europe so far.
For more info contact me at franck[at]joinmassive.com
Oh brings me back memories :) I did that at his age too. Dobsons are awesome, would dev a tracking system if I were 17 now (with a raspberry pie) keep on the good work!
