The israel lobby is too powerful to ever have their funding cut. Very few in Washington are critical of israel and those that are will be labled anti-semetic because no distinction can ever exist between criticism of israel and anti-semitism apparently.

It's truly pathetic how openly American polticians will kowtow to israel and even china these days. Whatever they are getting in return must be worth it.

I see this argument often and it is pretty ridiculous. Israel is still the beneficiary of billions of dollars worth of US taxpayer dollars every year. We shouldn't be spending that kind of money on your nations security when we have homeless and starving Americans not being taken care of.

Recaptcha/Google's pervasiveness on the internet is one of the most annoying things I repeatedly have to deal with. It's easy enough to block all google servers at the hosts level. But then you have lazy developers for government websites using it and need to enable them. They've just wound themselves so tightly into the internet it's near impossible to exist without interacting with their services.

Can't wait to show this to my wife

That's better than the flu shot most years. Why is the bar so high for covid?

What part of Apple's privacy policy is unbelievable?

He says he had an adverse reaction to the AstraZeneca shot.

I appreciate the pristine and untouched beauty of Yosemite as much as anyone, and I backpack in its wilderness at least once a year. But the government could be doing a lot more to clear the forests and prevent the rapid spread of wildfires. Auctioning off the old growth they need to chop down, or clearing the forest floor of fuel where possible could pay for itself, and protect what is left.

That's more about challenging the status quo not bad project management.

Weightlifting in particular is extremely beneficial for men, particularly as they age because of the testosterone gains and their affect on mood, weight, muscle building, etc...

I hate to be a conspiracy theorist but if covid was made in a lab this seems like the biggest grift of all time. I can't imagine how much of that money just disappeared.

I am equally stunned at the level of "pesimism" in your comment. We used to do things just because, just for the thrill of exploration, and pushing the limits of human civilization. If Elon wants to spend his money on this, and the government as well for their own reasons, why are you so frustrated? Plenty of money gets spent on fixing problems on Earth.

>The Hazara will be persecuted. Women will be delegated back to being second class citizens.

The Taliban has indicated that they have no intention of doing either of those things. In their address they explicitly stated they would protect minorities and womens rights to education.

While I don't personally support their governance, the previous government of Afghanistan was nothing more than a vassle state of the US/western occuption riddled with corruption. It was a literal blackhole where governments would dump money with very little effort to be traced, and wage proxy wars. I am glad that government has collapsed. I pray for peace for my countrymen, and I do hope the Taliban stick to their word, and bring peace to the wartorn nation. Do not forget that our media is riddled with propaganda. Their efforts over the past decade to remove the puppet government and have peace talks with the occupying forces give me some hope that things have changed. At the end of the day the US and western nations never belonged in that country, and the Afghan peoples destiny is better left in their own hands. May God be with them.

The far left had in short order become more insufferable than the far right. The lack of self-awareness is astounding. Truly a totalitarian movement.

Can't imagine why you're being downvoted

The Honda Jet was a surprising shift for the company. Built mostly in house, including the powerplant. And Honda Japan at least is still a prestigious company that attracts brilliant engineers.

My ex was obsessed with League of Legends. She'd escape to that game whenever life got tough, though she played it frequently regardless. I can understand how video games in general offer an accessible form of escapism to those who are suffering IRL. I wonder if there is any benefit to it though.

A lot of people don't have a desktop so a very powerful laptop that just works (tm) well for software development and can be lugged around effortlessly is ideal. I haven't owned a desktop myself in years and many engineers I know have been letting their rigs collect dust as the laptop just does it all.

For the price, there isn't something comparable in all respects.

Huawei is a fairly large tech company and this whole situation with the last administration is in-line with the subject matter typically discussed on this site.

In this case would a protein subunit vaccine like NovaVax have been a better choice for vaccinating the populace? Or would we then have run into the same issue but with spike?

Let me preface by saying I don't think software engineering requires talent per se, but it absolutely does require being able to think abstractly/logically about problems and a certain level of intellect. From my experience in upper-division university courses, less than a quarter of the students are capable of this.

Being a code-monkey is trivial, being able to design the optimal solution for any given problem is a talent. University programs are increasingly shifting towards a bootcamp style curriculum rather than focusing on the science of CS.

It's difficult to convince people to care about the homelessness problem. Particularly if they have only ever had unpleasant interactions with the homeless. You can't easily ignore your instinct of pattern recognition.

Increase in spending on jobs for homeless does nothing for those that are mentally ill. Conversely increase in spending on mental health programs does nothing for those that were simply down on their luck. Given a finite amount of money, there doesn't seem to be a simple solution. And you'll have to forgive anyone that would rather just not spend anymore as the relationship between expenditure and number of homeless is not inversely correlated, quite the opposite unfortunately.

Apple go above and beyond the competition with their security updates and hardware support. That said I'm not gonna judge them too harshly for not supporting more than one major os version. That they even support multiple is nice. In general I think the expectation of receiving support while being one major version behind is kind of absurd. You sort of accept the risks when you decide that potential unresolved bugs aren't worth the upgrade.

Yeah israel has a great human rights record if you ignore their treatment of palestinians and other minorities.

I notice how whenever there is anything remotely negative about israel on HN or reddit, the shills come out. The script is always the same (only democracy in the middle east, our greatest ally, the US gets more from them than the other way around, etc.)

At this point I have to wonder if JIDF are real and not just a 4chan meme or these are some advanced GPT-3 sockpuppet accounts.

No just the ones that spread falsehoods meant to create the illusion that anything but total support is absurd.

Same here, spent two hours programming on the train and it went down by about two percent.

So glad I went with the spec I did, all the power I need with room to grow.

I met my ex-gf on some stock trading discord. I had a random avatar, she had a real photo of herself. She said I spoke confidently and was funny so she reached out. I liked her sense of humor and ability to banter, but also she was gorgeous. We very quickly fell for eachother.

I wouldn't consider myself bad looking but I also don't think my looks are so good I could pull with them alone. She liked who I was and how I made her feel, the comfort and safety talking with me brought her. And although she did think I was attractive, I don't think it would have mattered how I looked since the other things were more important to her. Ultimately we dated for 7-months and spent about half of that together. We broke up mostly because the distance became more of an issue as time went on rather than less.

I think that looks may gather more attention in totally vain settings like tinder where your entire basis for giving someone a chance is some photos and bio text. And those using the app to actually find a friend to build a relationship with are lost.

Our experience was more akin to a party or social setting. My ex and I got to see how one another interacted with people, got to "overhear" the jokes we told others. We could playfully flirt with eachother. We would both search eachothers names and read what the other posted while we were away. It was a very sweet experience that reminded me of a highschool romance between two in a friend group. That setting was far more forgiving to forming a meaningful relationship than dating apps.

I've had my 14" M1 Pro for just over a week now. It has performed amazingly. But I also don't install tons of random apps and let them run in the background. I never restore from backups, I manually transfer files from my user folder over to my new setup. I always check whether an app has native M1 support before downloading, though I understand this isn't an option for everyones workflow yet. In cases where the app is literally a wrapper for a website like discord, I just use the website. Or in the case of zoom where I just don't trust the app to be on my computer and the website is sufficient. If something I used previous doesn't have native support I look for an alternative and a couple times I have found something better and/or open-source. I understand rosetta 2 has some issues with overusing swap, so I would rather avoid degrading my ssd and experience.

So far this has worked for me, and I'm able to get two full day's of battery life. I'm away from my desk far more frequently now.

It doesn't matter what the truth is at this point because the majority of scientist have demonstrated they are massive cowards and won't speak out against patently false information in the mainstream for fear of becoming pariahs.

Every faux pas will earn you a death threat these days. They are trite and meaningless.

Taking anyone on the far right/left seriously is like giving in to a child throwing a tantrum. People need to stop being so spineless and develop some convictions. We are regressing to a point where people are afraid to exercise their freedom of speech.

If you don't possess some means of defending your family from real threats, you've already failed at your job. I understand HN leans left, but buy guns and learn to use them. The police will not be there to help you when you need it.

SF is a perfect example of the consequences of not holding politicians accountable. So long as the leadership of this city panders to their constituents by playing far-left identity politics, they are immune to any responsibility. SF is not even an outlier, practically every major city in the US is a shithole.

It is such a tragedy to have watched this city rot over the past couple decades. My only goal at this point is to find a solid remote gig and get the fuck out.

That your mind equates speaking freely to poking a bear says a lot. What makes you feel safe? Someone else being paid by your taxes to have the arsenal of guns?

>vaccines work

Which ones? The covid-19 ones? Their efficacy is waning at best. Multiple nations with >80% vaccination rate were still dealing with outbreaks last I checked. And before you talk mortality/hospitalization rates, those are down across the board, and clearly would have gone down regardless.

Science is being attacked by both sides. When I say they are being cowards, I mean that they have let 100 years of knowledge go out the window. Efficacy of masks was well understood pre-2020, and a vaccine actually stopped you from getting a virus pre-2020. Try stating that cloth masks do nothing but embolden people to partake in more risky behavior. And that perhaps it was a bad idea to rush out a vaccine given what we know about doing that (see: dengue fever). When scientist are too scared to admit ADE is a real possibility, they have put their paycheck before the safety of humanity.

And they will keep on buying Apple products.

Except that Israel study of like 2 million people showed that natural immunity was something like 7-16x more effective than the vaccine.

Hmm...

In your analogy Apple would be charging the gas station owner 30% not the person pumping. Why should the end-user care about developers fees? Apple built the entire ecosystem and infrastructure, they should be allowed to charge whatever they like.

Coding assessments are largely used to filter unqualified candidates and save time. You can't reasonably interview every applicant, so you set a small barrier in place and those who can cross it get the time. Coding in interviews is more about understanding your logical decisions and brain flow, whether you ask the right questions or approach problems in a reasonable way.

I got covid in march. I had a fever for two days, about two weeks of congestion and mucus, and loss of taste/smell for a month. I had two antibody tests done, july and september. I was positive on both. Got the J&J in setember because it was becoming impossible to do anything without a vaccine card and it was worse than covid. One and a half days of chills, fever, sweating.

Whatever antibodies I got from my vaccine will probably disappear before my natural ones. I still don't understand the point of getting people who had a natural immunity to get vaccinated. There is little to no evidence natural immunity is worse, and compelling evidence it is superior to a vaccine (see: Israel study).

I remain convinced the CDC is in bed with the pharma companies producing the vaccines.

Precisely, most people are less likely to make purchases if any amount of friction is introduced. You wanna make me sign up through your payment service to use the app? No thanks. I'll pick an alternative that supports Apple Pay.

And yet Wolenski, Fauci, the CDC, continue to "reccommend" people get vaccinated regardless of natural immunity and refused to answer the senate on whether they think those with natural immunity should be exempt from vaccine mandates.

There is no mandate for tetanus. Unless they just forgot to check mine when I went 15 years without one.

Vaccinated are still contracting the virus, spreading it, and being hospitalized. I don't think it's providing the safety you've been convinced it is.

Better to get natural immunity and just leave it at that. But it you got a vaccine afterwards from what I've gathered your natural antibodies will outcompete whatever the vaccine is producing. The inverse appears to be the same, in that, your body will be unable to produce its own antibodies after getting a vaccine because it is being outcompeted. This seems to pose an issue for variants, as your body will have no way of fighting off a sufficiently mutated virus, it will continue to produce the wrong antibodies. This is known as antibody-dependent enhancement, or ADE, and was a well understood risk prior to rushing out these vaccines.

While I'm sure there is pent up demand to go back to theatres, there just aren't that many movies to watch. And I think enough people are opting for the at home streaming option that it will affect box office numbers. It's a shame, I really did enjoy going to the theatres.

The funny thing is that Amazon really stresses their leadership principles and I recall one of them being "have a backbone", basically to disagree with anyone if you know you're right.

I can see how he snapped over his moron manager bringing gender into things.

I didn't see the author explicitly state how prominent these philosophies are, nor that they are unique, he just made a list of them. I think you are being very cynical in that regard.

I have a 4k Vizio dumb tv. It was the only one I could find that didn't have some laggy android/web OS and it's been solid for 4+ years. Never once connected it to the internet though.

I've seen enough people talking about it that I don't believe it is unique.

I check my activity a couple times a day, and there doesn't appear to be any correlation between use and control center randomly taking >1GB of memory. I could for instance check when all apps are closed and it's memory usage is high but then after a long day of work it's still floating around 30MB. I'm baffled at what the issue actually is but control center appears to be processing a lot more data now as all media seems to pass through it in some way.
