The point is, Lutz's future where you'll have to sell your car for scrap will probably not come.

It might make sense to do so, but you won't have to.

And, unlike a horse, a car doesn't require much to keep. If you have space to keep it (which, unless you live in a very densely populated urban area, you absolutely do), why wouldn't you? And on that note, if I could keep a pony for free, I would keep one too.
