I just started at a large international firm. ~1 week in I found that a collection of beefy AWS machines had been sitting around doing nothing for a least 5 years (potentially 7 years). The base cost? ~100k USD (we are based in Canada, so ~130k for us). Also, three of the machine (you have to have dev, staging and prod!) where running a (presumably) expensive third party financial software library. No one knew who to talk to about the cost of that lib. When I told my boss, the CTO, they just shrugged and implied that it was peanuts in the grande scheme of things. As far as I can tell the C-Level people just break up their days going to meetings talking and kick all the technical debt down the road. I find such waste upsetting, but, try to focus it as fuel to get my own company going (if successful it too will be disgustingly inefficient in 10 years!). sigh 1/3 of the best years of my brief spark of life on utter nonsense. probably best not to think about that.
