For reddit, try old.reddit.com, or you can set your account to always use old in preferences.

It's not as clean as hn, but way better than "new" reddit. (I use it even on my fast connection.)

https://i.reddit.com is also simple and AFAIU more lightweight.

Tends to work better than either www or old for console browsers (lynx, w3m, etc.)

Some features, notably search, are broken, however.

reddit search is broken no matter how you look at it, it's been an ongoing meme since the beginning. One always uses google to search reddit.

Reddit search is limited in several ways, most especially in that comments aren't indexed.

I actually find it useful though. It's among the features that kept me using Reddit as a blogging engine for as long as I did, though accumulating annoyances have since driven me from that.

It's not worth it given the censorship but if you encounter some answer on reddit via a search and want to access it the best way is through http://ceddit.com/r/whateverurlpath . It's even more javascript but it's the only interface left that both looks and acts like the original.
