IMHO, I’m sure a lot of people are fun and funny here. I kind of like that it’s more serious. If I’m looking for humor, I usually go to something like Reddit or twitter. Just my.02
(actually in all seriousness, several of the comments in the thread about Productivity Porn were genuinely hilarious..."If you're not worth $1 million liquid before 30, cut off your finger and work even harder")
Humorous comments here do get upvotes when they are actually insightful or witty. If someone wants to read pedestrian wise-cracks or wacky memes, there are whole websites dedicated to that.
The kind of joke that can only derail a perfectly good post and conversation is well avoided here because once you hit the cynical "huck huck" post, the rest of the thread is meaningless and devolves further and further until people finally stop responding to it, and there is no longer any interest in reading the other threads.
There are times a humourous observation, quip or quote is exactly what the doctor ordered. But online, that is nowhere near as common as the very tiresome "huck huck" type that nearly always can be interpreted as "my self-assumed humour is more important than what this post is about" or "let's ignore the post altogether and just regale in my self-assumed sense of humour instead!"
Everybody has a sense of humor; it’s just valuable to have places where earnest discussion can avoid being swamped by it.
HN’s guidelines communicate that it’s meant to be one of those places, and so people who appreciate that may downvote, flag, or chastise things even when they do find them funny.
Normally comments like this would unleash a joke from me. I'm happy to keep HN on a serious note. I think maybe the austere interface has something to do with the solemnity.
