What makes you think that?

view as:

Lina is the vtuber persona of Hector Martin @marcan42 who’s has been working on the rest of the Asahi Linux project. He’s based in Japan.

I get and support not wanting to spread information about someone that doesn't want it to be spread and if we put that into a box then sure - people can flag it, mods can redact it, the persona can ask (as they have now) people don't ask, and it's fine for the person to not want to acknowledge it. Put that in a box and I'm in full support.

When it comes to going outside that box though by plainly denying identity instead of de-emphasizing/sidestepping the identity I can't shake the uneasiness around "gaslighting for a good cause" not being right. Especially because this gets amplified by every other 3rd party who may just be taking identity claims at face value (which may or may not be what's happened here?).

It's not really important everyone know Lina's identity, especially if they don't want people to know it. At the same time it's not really important to try to convince people that they don't actually know something. Show them the understanding about the matter sure sure, and if they still try to publicize it don't let them doxx someone sure, but I don't think it's good to go further than that with it.

To that end I've tried to write this in a way that it has no relation to any person/identity in particular - just the topic at hand.
