This is pretty gross misuse of the word “slavery”.

Technically true. Though the quotes clearly warn (if you're familiar with English-language journalism conventions) that the phrase is metaphorical, or alleged by a 3rd party, or some such.

But meanwhile - trying to re-brand "AI" as "slAveI" strikes me as an excellent tactic for human rights & worker rights groups to use.

it is catastrophizing and clickbait.

Wired put the spoiler in the first 4 words of their headline. Plus quotes around "slavery". In my book, that 95% absolves them of those offenses.

How "AI" is completely unlike human intelligence: Our kids understand what images of evil look like and yet we never had to send them off to Kenya to be trained by a thousand underpaid workers. And those underpaid workers themselves were never so trained.

Why is that?

Why are they lobbying America... shouldn't they be lobbying ... Kenyan politicians?

I'd assume that "Big AI" can buy off Kenyan politicians far more cheaply than the US President. And if your in a sh*tty-enough situation, "whatever works" becomes your strategy.
