congrats ya'll, what happened in the past couple months to spike the number of patients funded? Would love to hear more about 'growth hacking' a charity like this.

Holy shit. I can't remember a time when a website had an immediate impact on me like this. I mean, literally 5 seconds after landing on the site I got what they were trying to do and couldn't click the fund button fast enough. Such a simple idea but maybe that's what makes it so damn brilliant. So cool.

Edit: When I first went to the site 15 minutes ago there were two profiles of people in need of medical care. The total outstanding balance for both treatments was around $650 USD. In just 15 short minutes both treatments have been fully funded according to my inbox. That's just phenomenal, and I bet this story on HN has a lot to do with that!

it had $438 million in revenue in 2018

it's not a small charity

Great to see they have managed to reach their funding target. Donated anyway!

They've raised a lot more than $15M, 3-4x that.

I'm impressed they raised ~$165,000 this year and almost $300,000. I wonder how many people donated and how big the average/median donation size were.

In celebration, most of the patients on their website are just $50 away from being funded: https://watsi.org/. Go fund one of them!

Raised over 100% of its funding already.

It may be completely unrelated, but it seems like development have increased in speed since they successfully collected the $150.000+ in donations.

No small amount either, they raised $100 million. Quite the turn.

So that's 2 donations in 8 years - or about 0.25 donations per year. And _three_ donations in the last year!

Or 1200% YoY growth!

(VCs please form an orderly queue...)

It's now £12m and still rising. What a guy.

I've been giving them money for a few years with concrete specific outcomes (surgery for people who can't afford it).

Best money I ever spent.

My nonprofit Invest it! which has helped 1000+ people so far.

Wow, very generous donations coming in. It's really nice to see.

We're really excited about this. If you can really raise tens of thousands of dollars like this, it could really change how non-profits operate. The payments are public and broadcast on Twitter, which is also really cool.

OP here. Posting this to encourage other companies and startups to hook up with Watsi and fund medical treatments for people in need.

Ping Chase or Grace @ Watsi - I'm sure they'll be super excited.

"And despite some skepticism, GiveDirectly's financial support is growing (from $5.5 million in 2013 to an expected $40-50 million this year), driven in large part by younger donors working in tech or finance, according to Niehaus."

And according to PG, http://www.paulgraham.com/growth.html

Raised over $112M to date. Talk about a cash sinkhole.
